World Read Aloud Day
March 5th is World Read Aloud Day - An international day to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to everyone. There are activities packs and even an online book you can read aloud with your class on the day. Head over to LitWorld to access these resources.
Reading Rockets
Reading Rockets - While this site is an American one, with some aspects focusing on Common Core, there is a lot of research based material relevant to Australian classrooms. Be sure to check out the Classroom Strategies, Reading 101, Looking at writing and helping Struggling Readers sections.
Books to Share
Want to listen to a story or read aloud a story with your class following along on the IWB? Want to highlight use of particular language devices, sentence structure or punctuation? Then use one of the sites below to display the books on your IWB and then use the Smart Tools to hghlight, underline or circle words and phrases.

MATHS
Top Drawer Maths
The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers has collaborated with experts from leading Australian universities to create Top Drawer Mathematics. This resource explores good teaching practice across five mathematical topics: fractions, mental computation, patterns, and statistical literacy and reasoning.
Each topic contains:
- Big ideas - the big ideas that underpin mathematics
- Misunderstandings - common misunderstandings and their causes, and teaching advice and activities to avoid or correct these
- Good teaching - key content, teaching approach suggestions, activities, videos, slide
- Presentations, worksheets and digital learning objects
- Assessment - aspects of assessment
- Activities - a collection of the student activities available in other parts of the drawer, along with further suggestions and ideas for other activities
- Downloads - the bank of downloadable files, such as student worksheets, teacher notes, activity templates and video transcripts.
The Mathematics Shed
I've featured The Mathematics Shed before (it's the sister of Literacy Shed) but now the guys who make AdamUp have joined The Mathematics Shed and all of their maths videos are now available on the site. Check them out - a great way to introduce or engage students in a new topic or use to reinforce concepts/formulas.
OTHER KLAs
AC History Units
This site has published units of work aligned to the Australian History syllabus and are developed by the History Teachers Association of Australia. There are units for Primary grades 2, 4 and 6, but I found the information on Teaching History section particularly useful in terms of building up my knowledge of history skills and language.
EngQuest
EngQuest provides resource material on engineering based design projects. There's a teachers section with all the information you require to get your students started on a project as well as a student section where they can log in and access additional materials and interactive games on the topic selected. You will need to set up an account to access the resources.
Story Writing Apps to Check Out
Little Story Creator
This app is a simple but effective way to create a talking photo book. Add photos, videos or audio to accompany your text.
Little Star Story Creator
Another story creator, which is even easier to use. Video cannot be added in this app but creates a sleek ebook with audio if you choose. Would be suitable for even kindergarten children.
Bookpress
This app is a little more complex to use but creates wonderful eBooks that can be read in iBooks. Would suit Primary grades.
