2019 Jefferson County Fair

Mark your calendars for July 10-14, 2019 for the Jefferson County Fair. The theme for this year's fair is - "Celebrating the Bounty of Our County"!!!!!!

Leaders & Volunteers required to enroll online

All Jefferson County 4-H leaders & volunteers are required to enroll online every year. Enrollment deadline is April 1. This is a very important piece to how we communicate with our leaders, clubs & volunteers. We appreciate your full participation and encourage leaders & volunteers to update their information regularly so we can send you important 4-H updates and information.

Food Preservation & Canning Workshop on May 29th

We will be having a food preservation and canning workshop on Wednesday, May 29th from 8:30 am to Noon at the 4-H Building. More details to come about the workshop, but contact the office if you would like to sign up! Registrations are due by Friday, May 24th.

Fair Entries Due June 17th

Pre-fair entries for foods, clothing, fashion show and livestock are due on Monday, June 17th. We want to try to make less trips to the office for all of you so we are trying something new this year, pre-fair entries will be done on-line this year except for ANIMALS. All animal forms will be paper forms. If you need help or don't have a computer with internet, call the office and make arrangements to come in and use a computer or get help!

4-H Camp Renegade Counselor Applications Due May 1st!!!

Wanted: Camp Counselors, age 14-18, for Camp Renegade to assist with recreation, workshops, nature, etc. Camp counselor training with supper is Tuesday, May 28, 6:00 pm, 4-H Building, Jefferson County fairgrounds. This training is a requirement for counselors. Applications at our office are due ASAP.

Animal Information

2019 Animal Identification Guidelines

There are new Animal ID guidelines for 2019 and are explained on our website at Animal ID Guidelines. Please look over the information carefully so you know how to ID your animals. If you would like a printed copy of the guidelines please contact the office.

District & State Horse Show Information

Information and registrations for the District and State 4-H Horse show is available at the office or on line at http://4h.unl.edu/horse/district-shows. Registrations are due May 10.

Horse Levels Testing

All exhibitors (including those who may only do halter classes) must pass 4-H Advancement Level 1 to be eligible to exhibit at the county fair horse show. The exam must be completed by June 17th of the current year. (Different deadline dates apply for district and state competition.) All participants who have not passed the 4-H Advancements Level 1 are not eligible to exhibit in the fair. State 4-H horse rules will be followed (refer to manual 373, 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide).

PASE and Life Challenge

PASE/ Life Challenge will be held June 17-18, 2019 at University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus. The Premier Animal Science Event (PASE) is a two-day event designed to help youth learn about issues related to the animal industry, explore career opportunities that are available, complete with other teens from across the state, and have FUN! Opportunities for youth include Livestock Judging, Poultry Judging, and Meats Judging, as well as Livestock Skill-a-thon and Livestock Quiz Bowl.


Life Challenge is a two-day event designed to help youth learn about issues related to family and consumer science, explore career opportunities that are available, compete with other teens from across the state and have FUN! Opportunities for youth include the Foods & Nutrition Challenge, Human Development Challenge, Design Challenge, and Entrepreneurship Investigation Challenge.


Deadline to sign-up is June 1.

Youth Quality Assurance Training

Jefferson County will be holding our last face to face session on Wednesday, May 22nd at 2 pm at the Extension Office. If you can't make it to that training, 4-Her’s can complete their Livestock Quality Assurance requirement online! All 4-Her’s enrolled in swine, beef, sheep, dairy goat, dairy cattle, meat goat, rabbits or poultry need to complete Livestock Quality Assurance. 4-Her’s need to complete their quality assurance requirement by June 15th.

Market Broilers

In an effort to provide more 4-Hers with the opportunity to show poultry at the fair, Farmers Cooperative has generously agreed to again provide broiler chicks for any

4-H or FFA member that would like to show them in the market broiler class at the county fair. Exhibitors will be responsible for all expenses related to raising the chicks and bringing them to the fair.


Chicks will be mailed to the Extension Office at the end of May and will need to be picked up as soon as possible. If you are interested in ordering some broiler chicks orders must be turned into the Extension Office by Thursday, May 9th! Please call the office with any questions!

Livestock Progress Shows and Clinics

Spring and early summer is a great time to start taking your livestock to progress shows and attending showmanship/fitting clinics. This allows the kids to get themselves and their animals experience before coming to the county and state fair. The extension office has been receiving numerous progress show and clinic flyers. We have them available here at the office or we can send them to you upon request.

Special Opportunties

State 4-H Camp

Summer 2019 is approaching fast! No summer is complete without a Nebraska 4-H Camp experience. Summer camps are open to everyone between the ages of 6 and 18. The full color brochure is now on our 4-H page at: https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/jefferson/Camp-Brochure-2018.pdf or you can pick one up at our office.

Nebraska State 4-H camps offer camps at these locations: Halsey and Gretna with more than 40 day and overnight camping programs and trips. Whether your child’s interest is in animals, robotics, nature and outdoor skills, tubing and kayaking, or just plain adventure, Nebraska 4-H camps provide the opportunities for all youth and all interests.

The 2019 National 4-H Raise Your Hand campaign kicks off April 1st!

The Raise Your Hand campaign, held from April 1 through May 15, is a nationwide call-to-action for 4-H alumni, supporters, and friends to vote for their state to win funding and help more kids in their community benefit from 4-H experiences. The three states with the most hands raised will receive $20K, $10K, and $5K. Last year, Nebraska 4-H, with over 14,000 hands raised, received second place. This year, you can help us reach #1! Raise Your Hand and vote for Nebraska 4-H. Voting is easy, and even if you have raised your hand in the past, your vote will still be counted this year! Raise Your Hand now at https://4-h.org/raise-your-hand/.

Nebraska 4-H Club/FFA Chapter of the Week

To honor our hardworking Nebraska youth in agriculture, the Midwest Messenger is featuring a new 4-H Club/FFA Chapter of the Week spotlight. Each week, a new club or chapter is highlighted on a sponsored full page display in the paper, featuring a photograph of current members and a brief biography of the club/chapter’s history and accomplishments. Finally, to boost their organization’s endeavors, the Midwest Messenger is giving each featured group a $50 gift card.

Senior Spotlight

The Extension Office is requesting that all 2019 seniors turn in a senior picture and a small paragraph describing some of your accomplishments in 4-H. We are also requesting that you include your future plans after high school. The pictures and descriptions will be posted on our Facebook page during the weekly "Senior Spotlight" and will be displayed at the fair. You can bring the pictures to the Extension Office to be scanned or you can email and attach them as a .jpg file to tyler.wolken@unl.edu or hayden.hemphill@unl.edu . You may also email your descriptive paragraph. Your pictures and written description paragraph are due in the office ASAP.

Workshop Ideas

We are looking for ideas for workshops in 2019. We would like to hear ideas of what you would be willing to attend. We would also like to hear from you regarding what times would work best for most people, after school, 1⁄2 days when school is out, etc. Please contact the Extension Office 402-729-3487 and let us know what YOU are interested in.
