December 2019 Newsletter
From the principal...
Thanks to all parents who take the time to support education by providing support for your child at home. Helping students make good eating choices, getting plenty of rest, and keeping up on daily school activities go a long way to help students be successful at school. For more tips to help students be successful please read the article below. During winter break be sure your children get time to relax and enjoy their time off, but remind them to read and prepare mentally once school gets ready to resume in January. Thank you for all your support of CMS students and staff!

Academic Success Starts at Home
By: U.S. Department of Education
The U.S. Education Department provides these tips for parents about how to be involved in your child's school, and what to do if problems arise.
-Work with your child's teacher and school to keep the lines of communication open.
-Partner with the teacher to enhance the academic success and social well being of your child.
-Attend parent-teacher meetings and stay informed about your child's academic progress.
-Discuss with your child's teacher what you can do at home to help your child.
-Talk with your child daily about school. Ask your child what he or she learned that day. Ask how the day went, and ask about your child's friends.
-Review your child's homework each evening, and consult homework Web sites if available. Be sure that your child completes all of his or her assignments.
Here are some questions to consider when trying to solve a problem with your child.
- Have you attended parent-teacher conferences at school?
- What is the best time to go to the school?
- What is the best way to approach a particular teacher or principal?

Ten Ways to Boost Your Child's Math Success (From Scholastic.com/parents)
- Make sure he understands the concept, or he's facing the daunting challenge of memorizing meaningless rules and drills.
- Teach her to write clearly and neatly. Tracing letters or writing on graph paper will improve her number writing.
- Be around to refresh his memory or explain forgotten concepts.
- Review math vocabulary to ensure she can define the skills she's learning.
- Promote putting down the calculator. Computing math problems in his head will reinforce concepts more quickly.
- Check to make sure your child is approaching her homework properly. She should study the textbook and practice the sample problem before starting the assignment.
- Encourage him to tackle more than just the assigned problems.
- Approach word problems together. Suggest that she read aloud, repeat, and draw a picture of each problem.
- Explain how math applies to real-life situations and challenge him to help you solve the math problems you encounter when you're out together, such as figuring out how many apples to buy or calculating change. He'll be more interested in mastering math if he realizes its value.
- Does she really know it? If she can answer a basic math question within three seconds she's mastered the concept. Try drills and flash cards to get her up to speed.

CMS Panthers First Lego League News
The team has been working really hard on the robotics challenges. They work well as a team and are making good progress. They interviewed the CEO of the hospital project to become more knowledgeable of the city problem they chose.
Looking ahead, they will practice “spontaneous” problem solving activities, build a scale model of the new hospital and prepare a presentation. They will also problem solve a strategy for getting the most points with the robot on the tournament floor. This includes experimenting with different builds and creating add-ons to facilitate the solution.
Important Dates:
Every Wednesday from 3:25 - 4:30 we will continue to work on the projects. We will have a robotics practice one day over winter break where we can spend an extended amount of time in one setting.
The Kansas –Central Region Championship will be held on January 18th at Lakewood Middle School in Salina, KS (1135 E Lakewood Cir, Salina, KS 67401) and will run approximately from 8AM to 5PM.
