Math, Science, and Social Studies
*We have almost met our goal of all students completing their final accuracy check. We have a few students still working this week who are very close. Students who have met this goal will be working on Front Row-Geometry this week.
Science-We had a great week completing our "Wiggling Worms" unit. This was such a fun unit with many exciting activities. We completed our "A Day in the Life of an Earthworm" stories on Friday. I have read many of them already and they did a great job incorporating all that we learned about earthworms in their stories. This week, as soon as we receive our materials, we will begin our next unit "Name That Shell". We will read more from Wonder until that time.
Reading, Writing, Vocab and Word Study
Grammar--As we switch to every other day of word study, we will be using the other days to begin a concentrated focus on grammar skills. This week we will be assembling a Correct Sentence flipbook to begin focusing on reminders of correct sentence structure.
Reading--We will be having our first meetings of book clubs today. Students will work with their group to discuss the setting of the story and will set a new reading goal for the week. Students will have reading to complete by Friday (our second group meeting). This can take place at school and/or at home. While we are focusing on these historical fiction novels, we will have class lessons on drawing inferences, looking for main idea and details, and summarizing. We will also use www.getepic.com to read nonfiction books related to the time period of the historical fiction books. This is a site students can use at home as well to read all kinds of books! It's easy to use, includes books like Big Nate and Boxcar Children, and also has nonfiction books on all kinds of topics. Students can link to it from their Google Classroom accounts. There is also an app! Once there, they log in with the following info:
username---- jana.foster@cps.k12.ar.us
password---- reading
Writing--We will be taking a break from research and will be focusing on opinion writing this week. We will do several 5-7-5 writes on a variety of topics. Students will also be selecting an opinion topic of their own to develop into a five paragraph essay. We will begin the planning stages and craft introduction paragraphs this week.
