Grant Gazette
October 2020
Dear Families,
Dear Families:
October is usually the month for Parent-Teacher Conferences, and this year is no exception. Conferences will be held on Oct. 19 (4-7pm), Oct. 20 (4-7pm) and Oct. 22 (1-4pm) However, the way we do conferences will look much different than in years past.
There will be no in-person, face-to-face parent-teacher conferences this fall. Instead, conferences will be held either by Zoom or by phone call.
You will (or should have gotten) get a purple piece of paper on Friday, Oct. 2 that explains this process a little more and gives you the opportunity to choose a date and time for your child's conference (not every family will get their number one choice, but we do the best we can!).
On that purple piece of paper, you'll also have a chance to tell us if you'd like to have conferences via Zoom or by phone call.
We will take those returned pieces of purple paper and will schedule conferences on Oct. 8. On Oct. 9, you'll get a letter from your child's teacher telling you when your conference is and what you'll be talking about. You may also view this letter on Seesaw.
If you're not sure how Zoom works or how to get it on your computer, tablet, or phone, I have attached some instructions right under my name. Just click on the box below!
Have a wonderful October!

The drop off lane is a "kiss and go" lane. This is the lane closest to the curb. Please pull as far forward as you can, stay in your car, give your child a quick kiss and a hug, and send them out on the sidewalk to keep the line moving. We would like the line to move quickly so parents with other commitments can get through the line efficiently.
If you'd like to get out of your car, please park somewhere else and walk to school. We respectfully ask that you wear a mask if you are on school grounds before or after school
Counselor's Corner
As we begin October and we start to see temperatures fall, please let me know if your family needs help getting warm coats for your children. I have a few resources for new and nearly new coats, hats, gloves, and boots for those who are feeling a financial pinch this year.
During the last week of September and throughout October, we are observing Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbon Run has been cancelled this year, but students are still learning how to be happy and healthy by dealing with bullies, making healthy diet choices, following directions on medicine labels, and only taking drugs they need or are prescribed to them. There is much more to being drug-free than the pledge, so we are also learning some great coping skills in all of our guidance classes, which most classes have every other Friday.
Be sure to check out the chart of what students are learning in guidance classes. These are skills that will help them be better students, and skills you will love to see at home, as well. Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is any way I can help your Grant student!

Parent's Read-At-Home Plan for Student Success
Reading with your child is a proven way to promote early literacy. One of the most important things you can do to prepare your child for his/her future is helping to make sure that your child is reading on grade level by third grade. You can influence your child’s success in school by making reading a daily routine in your home. Research shows that students who read at least 20 minutes per day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Do you want to help your child to be successful in school? They simply need to read.
What can I do to support my child?
Read at home with your child daily (at least 20 minutes) with books they enjoy. Some ways to do this:
Read out loud to your child.
Listen to your child read.
Echo read (you read a line, then they repeat).
Read together at the same time.
Reread or retell favorite stories
Talk to your child about the reading
As you read:
Ask your child to share what they remember.
Ask questions about the reading.
Talk about your favorite parts
Talk about what you have learned.
Talk about how the pictures in the book connect to the words on the page.
Help connect the reading to your child’s life or other books they’ve read
