Student Wi-Fi @ Buckhorn High!

The new wireless installation that allows students Wi-Fi access went LIVE last week.

It is strongly recommended that parents go over the Acceptable Usage Policy AGAIN with their child(ren). You can access the MCBOE Code of Conduct HERE. The Acceptable Usage Policy can be found on pages 15-19. (The page numbers listed are the printed page numbers at the bottom of each page, not the online page number you see as you are scrolling).

Please Note: The section titled “Electronic Communication Devices" found on page 14, will need to be revised to reflect that the BHS administration/teachers ARE ALLOWING students to use their own devices for school-related activities and assignments. All other information in this section still applies and students CAN lose this privilege.

***Buckhorn High School and the MCBOE assume no responsibility for data overage charges, theft, loss, or damage to any personal/wireless communication device.***

Scoliosis Screening

Alabama requires ninth graders to be provided a screening for scoliosis. Ninth graders at Buckhorn High School will be screened January 21-23, with the majority of students being screened on the 21st.

The goal of this program is that children having spinal deformities be detected early and placed under medical care before serious disability and deformity occur. The program is designed to screen children at school and to teach students and their parents about spinal deformities. Scoliosis, the medical term for lateral curvature of the spine, is a common disorder. Between 5 and 10 percent of schoolchildren have spinal curves. It is slightly more common in girls than boys and has its onset usually about ages 10 to 12. About 85 percent of curves are idiopathic (of unknown origin), although there appears to be a strong familial tendency in the idiopathic group.

In addition to scoliosis, kyphosis or “humpback,” and lordosis, sometimes referred to as “swayback,” can be seen in the same age groups to be screened. Kyphosis and lordosis are much less common than scoliosis. Although most curvatures are of minor consequences, progressive spinal deformity may lead to crippling spine deformity and heart and lung problems; therefore, early detection and treatment are essential. When detected early, treatment with a brace may prevent the progression of the deformity and may prevent the need for surgery. When detected late, surgery may be necessary.

Spinal deformities in the early years often go undetected because of their painless onset. Unless the condition is severe, it will not be visible to parents or others in the fully clothed child. Parents cannot be expected to detect the curve at an early state. Early detection, however, can be accomplished by mass screening of the critical age groups by trained personnel. Therefore, all schoolchildren in Grades 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 (ages 11 through 14), including special education students, should be screened once a year for this potential problem.

If you have any questions, please contact Nurse McFarlen:

ACT/SAT Announcements

Save the Date - Tuesday, April 28, 2015

All 11th grade students will take the ACT Plus Writing at BHS during the school day. The Alabama State Department of Education is requiring that all 11th grade students in the state of Alabama take the ACT on the selected date. Students will not be required to pay a fee for the ACT given on April 28th.

Registration will also take place prior to the actual test date at BHS, so there is no need to register online. Please keep in mind that the April 28th test date will not appear on the ACT website because this date has been selected specifically for 11th grade students in the state of Alabama.

Students will receive more information regarding the April 28th test date as we get closer to that time. A username and password for online ACT test prep will be provided to all current eleventh graders prior to the ACT test in April.

ACT study packets can be picked up in the guidance office.

The make-up date for the ACT Plus Writing assessment will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

Counselor Contacts: Mrs. Dee Gordon, Mr. Dan Schwanke, Mrs. Stephanie Wheeler

A Few Reminders: Rules & Regulations

Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.

Car Riders

Students are NOT allowed to walk to Winchester Road to get in a car after school. ALL cars must pull onto campus to safely pick up car riders. Students who do not follow this rule will be suspended, per Mr. Markham. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.

Outside Food

Please remember that it is Buckhorn High School's Policy to NOT allow any outside food to be delivered to the school during regular school hours. (This policy does not apply to a 'brown bag' lunch that is prepared at home and brought to school by the student).

Checking Student Out of School

It is Buckhorn High School's policy to NOT allow student check-outs after 3:15 p.m.

Only custodial parent(s) will be allowed to check a student out of school, unless the custodial parent(s) has specifically designated someone else to check the student out of school. School officials will keep accurate records as to whom, what time, and for what reason students are checked out of school. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 21 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]

Student Publications

The Board of Education authorizes school officials to allow students to have student sponsored publications within the school, and expects the administration to monitor such publications to the extent that disruptions do not result from the contents. Student publications are subject to and will be expected to meet standards associated with responsible journalism. The principal and student publication sponsor are responsible for the content of such publications.

Student publications not approved by the Principal are not allowed, and the Principal shall not allow distribution of publications without prior approval. A certified person shall be appointed to be responsible for supervising student publications, and shall report directly to the Principal in the production of such publications. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]

Media Coverage of School Events

Occasionally local news media visit schools in Madison County to do special reports or follow up on certain news events. As a part of their coverage they often film certain aspects of the school.

It is the principal’s decision whether to allow news media to come into the schools and cover certain events. Extra precautions are taken when the media is covering a sensitive topic or event that might have a negative impact on the school, staff and students.

Parents who have concerns about their child possibly being filmed or photographed by the media should contact the principal. Principals will make every effort to accommodate the wishes of the parent, but it should be understood that it is very difficult to foresee every possible situation that might occur from media coverage of the schools and school events. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
