Welcome Back!

Young Women's College Prep Charter School is back in full swing again! This year, we are embracing, educating, and empowering nearly 300 girls in grades 7th-10th. It was a real pleasure on August 31st to welcome back returning students and families, and to greet the new students in the Class of 2021!

We are excited to announce some of our new staff members, including Principal Toyia Wilson, coordinator of Instruction Sanya Pelrah, Staff Developer Tracy Harris, and Director of College Counseling Bradley Rosenbaum. Together with our returning faculty, our team is ready to provide a rigorous academic experience coupled with social-emotional supports in a culture in which college enrollment is expected and achieved!

Thank you for your support over the past year, which has helped to provide the innovative programs that are breaking down the barriers to college that our students face.

9th Graders Moved into RIT for Summer Bridge

This year's 9th Grade Summer Bridge program took place August 2nd-5th on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology. More than 30 students stayed overnight in Nathaniel Rochester Hall dorm rooms; ate at the famous Gracie's dining hall; took classes such as College Exploration, Career Exploration, and Financial Literacy; and participated in an RIT College Fair where they got to hold a human brain and make DNA necklaces. The students also participated in the Mad City Money program by Summit Federal Credit Union, and a team building field trip to Camp Arrowhead.

Here at YWCP, the students will be sharing what they learned with their sisters. The 9th graders will host a fair in which they will show off the career presentations they created at Summer Bridge. This allows the girls to continue to build on what they learned at RIT, and help to grow excitement for the 8th graders who will be at RIT this summer!

9th Grade Summer Bridge was made possible with support from the Xerox Foundation, Thomson Reuters, and donors like you.

7th Graders Get a Taste of College @ Nazareth

Nearly 40 incoming 7th graders participated in our annual Summer Bridge program on the campus of Nazareth College. The program takes place over three weeks during July and August, and is sponsored by a Community Partners Grants from the United Way of Greater Rochester.

During Summer Bridge, the students attended classes, participated in STEM projects with the Girls Scouts of Western NY, learned yoga, took a campus tour, and enjoyed field trips to the Erie Canal, Letchworth State Park, and the Seneca Park Zoo!

Summer Scholarships Promote Year-Round Learning

Thanks to donors like you, the YWCP Foundation distributed nearly $4,000 in scholarships in June to 15 YWCP students to attend summer camps and programs. These programs included RIT Smash Math Camp (pictured below), Mountain High Adventure Camp in the Adirondacks, Hunger Games Camp by Writers & Books, Dance Camp at Hochstein School of Dance, and Basketball Fundamentals at the University of Rochester (pictured below).

Programs like these are critical to helping our students continue to learn and grow over the summer months, and in creating an impressive college application!

Funds for the scholarships were raised through the Foundation's "100 Women to the 10th Power" Campaign and our March fashion show. To contribute to this fund, please click here or call (585) 254-0320 x1111.

Mentors and Mentees Celebrate New Friendships

In June, the YWCP Foundation celebrated the culmination of its first Mentorship Program. The program matched more than a dozen women from the community with YWCP students. The pairs met 1-2 times per month to work together to develop skills that are essential for long-term success in high school, college and beyond. Research shows that teens who have a mentor in their lives are more likely to stay in school and thrive!

Our Partners Make it Possible!

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the exciting opportunities the students at YWCP are experiencing thanks to donors like you. The continued commitment and support of our community, and the partners below, is critical to our students' success.

About YWCP

YWCP Charter School is Rochester's first and only all-girls public school. It opened its doors in August 2012 to its first class of students, and will grow over the next three years to serve nearly 500 students in grades 7-12. YWCP is an affiliate of the Young Women's Leadership Network, which supports five highly successful single-gender schools in NYC and 11 affiliates across the country.

The mission of the YWCP Foundation is to break the cycle of poverty for young urban girls by increasing their economic self-sufficiency through improved leadership skills, career awareness, college readiness, and college access. To accomplish this, YWCP Inc. creates, implements, and supports innovative programs that educate the whole girl - academically, socially, and emotionally.
