Overview of this professional development:
This two-day training will provide an overview of the relationship between behavior and communication, discuss the concepts of communication vs. verbal abilities, and address levels of support and specific skills individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Intellectual Disabilities (InD) need to learn to be effective communicators. A review of practical strategies for teaching communication skills in the presence of behaviors will also be discussed. Following the initial overview of communication and behavior, a focus on integrating AAC/Assistive technology into the learning environment will follow. Participants will gain knowledge on how to predict and prevent behavioral problems, how to match interventions to the functions of behavior while simultaneously learning how to establish and enhance communication skills with those individuals who require AAC to communicate and access their leaning environment.
Strategies for overcoming obstacles and lessons on “How to make the seemingly impossible possible” will be presented. Video examples, interactive group projects, hands on use and programming of AAC/Assistive Technology will be interspersed throughout the two days and practical take home ideas and lessons will be integrated into the professional development event. The target audience for this professional development is teachers, SLP’s, OT’s, Behavior Specialists, Paraprofessionals and other educators that support students in need of Assistive Technology. Individual participants are welcome however, teams that support students collaboratively are recommended.
