Back to School COVID Updtate

Dear Parents:

I hope this email finds you well and that the first four days of school have gone well for your students, all things being considered. Overall, things seem to be going very well, although not perfect. As a district, we continue to evaluate and respond to known issues in an effort to improve our protocols and routines and to keep you informed. I am writing to address a few known issues we have experienced this year.

First, we know traffic issues were more elevated than normal for the first few days at our elementary buildings. We are working on improving those issues as we settle in to routine. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we iron out details. Some changes may be forthcoming as we continue to assess new ideas and options for reducing the amount of time involved in these routines.

Second, we know our virtual and in person educational schedules and routines will take some time for students to get used to. With the extended time off, we understand there will be some additional frustrations and adjustments as we get back in shape for rigorous and relevant learning. Please continue to communicate any issues, needs, or feedback with your student’s teachers. We are here to serve your family and to make sure your child receives an excellent education, no matter which learning option was chosen. Communication and collaboration will be key in getting all issues properly addressed.

Last, I want to reassure you that our district is committed to timely and transparent communication. As stated prior in our Return to School and Response Plan, the district will communicate as quickly and appropriately as possible any confirmed positive COVID-19 case(s) in our district. This will include any partial or intermittent shutdowns that result from any such case(s). This will also include communication for close-contact tracing, in partnership with Johnson County Health Department. The district is aware that rumors continue to circulate within our community. We will continue to abide by our commitment to provide timely communication to help keep you informed with factual information.

With four days of school completed, we have not experienced any positive cases. Our nursing and administration team continue to respond collaboratively to any issues of illness among our students or staff in order to mitigate risk. The district’s screening and response protocols continue to be available for your reference on our district website on our COVID landing page. They may also be accessed by clicking here.

As stated prior, we do anticipate issues may get a little worse before they get better. We know schools across our country are not exempt from positive cases of COVID-19. Knob Noster School District is no exception. The district’s Return to School and Response Plan includes protocols for how we will respond to a positive case, should that occur.

We also know that communication, partnership, and commitment to the common health of our community are all keys to success. Overall, our students, parents, and employees have done a fantastic job of following our protocols. Thank you for your ongoing vigilance in doing so. If you or your child are ill, PLEASE keep them AND siblings home until they are well. Isolating when ill or when exposed to illness is a keystone to preventing the spread of the virus. Likewise, we know when we are ill, our bodies are far more vulnerable for contracting the virus. Staying home simply makes sense and is the right thing to do.

Drills

The safety of students, faculty and staff is very important to us. Practicing safety drills is part of an overall plan to help maintain a safe environment. The information below will help you to better understand each of the drills that we practice throughout the school year.

Students and staff practice five primary emergency drills each year:
- Fire Drills
- Evacuation Drills
- Lockdown Drills
- Tornado Drills
- Earthquake Drills



FIRE DRILLS
Whiteman Elementary will conduct a Fire Drill. We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded. By practicing they will know what to do and how to do it quickly, not only in case of a fire, but at any time the building needs to be evacuated.

EVACUATION DRILLS
Whiteman Elementary will practice Evacuation procedures are implemented when conditions inside or outside the building are not safe. Students practice getting back into the building and exiting the building quickly in the event of an threat.

LOCKDOWN DRILLS
The school will conduct Lockdown Drills during the school year. The purpose of a lockdown is to keep students, staff and visitors safe from any danger outside or inside the building. During these drills, teachers will discuss and practice with their students what actions they would take during a real lockdown event.
TORNADO DRILLS
The purpose of the tornado drill is to practice moving students to a safe location within the building in case of severe weather or tornado.
EARTHQUAKE DRILLS Everyone will practice how to drop, cover and hold on, and teachers will discuss the importance of earthquake preparedness. This is a chance to practice what to do during earthquakes to reduce potential injuries.

Math Summer Challenge Reminder


Just a reminder to turn in your Summer Math Challenge game boards to Mrs. Ortiz next week to be entered in a drawing for some fun prizes! Counseling News

WE Families,

This week has been a whirlwind, however, it feels so good to have our students back at Whiteman virtually and in person! If you do not know me, I am Mr. Leonard the school counselor at Whiteman! My counseling program offers many different services, including counseling lessons, individual counseling, small group counseling, and supporting the school in anyway that I can. I am reaching out to communicate that I plan on starting my lessons next week as well as small groups by the week of September 7th, including deployment groups. Thanks to those who have reached out to me already for participating in small groups! In small groups, students are either referred to me by their teacher, parents, or my own observations. These groups typically run 30 minutes once a week for 6 weeks and occur during the school day in times that do not impact the learning of your child (lunch, early morning, or at the end of the day).



If you have a loved one who is deployed or will be deploying soon, please send me an email and I will send home a consent form for your child to participate. In deployment groups, students are given the opportunity to experience, share, process, and talk about their own personal feelings and thoughts of the challenges inherit within a deployment. Students share the common experience of having a loved one away from the home, which provides them the opportunity to connect their own experiences to that of others. We discuss coping strategies to help with strong emotions, create/write thoughts and feelings of their experiences, and send packages in the mail to their loved one who is gone. If you have indicated to me that a loved one is deployed and have not recieved a consent form yet, please send me an email so I can get it to you as soon as possible. Thanks everyone for being patience with us in the beginning of this school year! We will continue to do what we can to best support your child(ren) while at school. We have almost made it through week 1!

Recorders for 4th and 5th Graders

Hello 4th and 5th grade parents,

My name is Kelsey Dingman and I am the music teacher at Whiteman Elementary. I am so excited to be making music with your students this year in the most fun and safest way possible. As mentioned on the school supplies list, this year fourth and fifth grades will be playing the recorder in music class. Normally, I use my multiple classroom sets, however to keep everyone safe at this time, I am asking that each student purchase their own. If you could please have your student send in $6.50 by Tuesday September 1st, I would greatly appreciate it. Students may turn it in to me in the mornings before school, or bring it to their teachers when they arrive. I do have change in my classroom, so if your student brings cash I will be able to give back change. Checks can be made out to Whiteman Elementary.

The recorders I am purchasing come with a necklace, cleaning kit, and carrying case which are all necessary for us to take the safest precautions in playing this year. If you have any questions or concerns in regards to payment, please email me as soon as you are able so that we can make any accommodations necessary. Friendly Reminders


1. Turn in all district required forms: (AUP/Handbook, Title Compact, MFLC, Medication, Free/Reduced Application)


2. Remember to send your child with a water bottle


3. Remember to send your child with an extra mask


4. Make sure students are well-rested and eat breakfast


5.All schools in the district dismiss early at 2:00 every Wednesday for teacher professional development.


6. Every student must have a current immunization record on file. Mrs. Crabtree sent an e-mail this week. If you are unsure if your student's immunization is current, please e-mail jcrabtree@knobnoster.k12.mo.us.


7. A couple of reminders about arrival and dismissal in the parking lot. Do not block or park on the crosswalk area. If the crossing guard is walking out and/or already standing in the crossing area, do not pull in or out of the parking lot. We had a few instances this week, and we want to make sure everyone gets across safely.

KNPS Media Release Reminder

Panther Families,

I am sending a reminder regarding our district's Media Release information which is provided to parents in student/parent handbooks.

The link below outlines the media release guidelines. Please note if you do not give permission to your child's school and Knob Noster School District to publish photographs or video of your student, we request that you notify your child's school office, in writing, by dismissal on Friday, August 28, 2020. No action is required on your part if you give permission to the school district to publish your child's photo, video, or name.

Please note that KNPS does not control the disclosure or use of photographs or video taken by participants at events that are open to parents, community members, and/or the news media. Additionally, opting out does not apply to students while participating in public events, like academic competitions, performances and athletic events. Student photos and names from these events may be published by KNPS and/or news media.

All individuals that are interested in fulfilling one of these roles, please have your form filled out by Friday, September 4th.
