Summary of the December 19, 2019 School Board Meeting
Search for New Permanent APS Superintendent
The Arlington School Board has initiated the search for a new superintendent. To provide counsel in this important process, the Board has retained the services of BWP & Associates, a national executive search firm.
Community engagement is a very important step in this process, and the Board is seeking your input on desired qualifications for the new superintendent. Community input will be used to assist the Board in developing an in-depth profile for the position and identifying a highly qualified leader who will enhance our positive culture of learning and promote excellence and equity for all students.
The School Board invites all members of the community to participate in a meeting facilitated by BWP. Please attend one of the following forums, which are open to everyone:
- Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. (Spanish), Kenmore Middle School, 200 S. Carlin Springs Road
- Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m., Washington-Liberty High School, 1301 N. Stafford Street
- Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m., Wakefield High School, 1325 S. Dinwiddie Street
- Saturday January 25 at 10 a.m., Dorothy Hamm Middle School, 4100 Vacation Lane
Please note that if you cannot attend one of the community forums listed above, you will have the opportunity to share your input with the search firm through a survey scheduled to open on January 21st.
Additional information about the superintendent search can be found on the APS website at https://www.apsva.us/engage/search-for-new-aps-superintendent/.
Elementary School Planning for 2021-22
In 2021, APS is projected to welcome more than 30,000 students, and will open a new elementary school and add high school seats.
On December 9, staff shared that they will be focusing on Proposal 1 which—if adopted by the Board—would do the following:
- Keep more McKinley students together, moving a majority of McKinley students together to Reed with the principal and members of the staff
- Allow boundaries that will maximize walking to neighborhood schools as much as possible and keep together more students from each school community
- Allow about 100 more students from the Arlington Traditional School (ATS) waitlist, including siblings, to enroll in ATS
- Place Immersion in a central location
- Create neighborhood seats in the high-growth Rosslyn-Courthouse area
There are several ways to get up to speed on this process, the challenges that APS faces, and these proposals to move schools:
- Visit the Engage page for detailed information, a timeline and FAQs
- Read a two-page Infographic in English or Spanish
- View a 5-minute video for an overview
- View a 30-minute Online Information Session that presents information and answers community questions (Spanish pending)
Proposal(s) may be revised as APS gathers ideas and suggestions from community members before School Board action on Feb. 6, 2020. Any changes made would take effect in Sept. 2021. To learn more, visit www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-2020-elementary-school-boundary-process/.
