My Thanks for Each of You
Being a part of a community of educators that help students expand their minds the way you do is so rewarding. Thank you for your hard work as well as the challenges you are providing your students individually. The meaningful events that took place last week were great but the differentiation in instruction our students need in the classroom is just as important. You know that the arts related instruction is great for our students - it helps our students be better learners - but they still have to have the best instruction everyday for the most learning to take place.
The biggest question we all need to start asking ourselves is - What will I commit to do this week to make a difference in the progress of my students? You can even talk as a PLC and brainstorm commitments that together you can commit to.
Before closing I want to say thanks to those who are posting on Facebook. We heard back from parents on the survey that they like it and want more. It is s great place to share how we are integrating the arts along with using StemScopes and other new resources. I frequently ask our parents to follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook. I am asking you to do the same. If you follow the district and other elementary schools in our district, you can get a good picture of what is happening all around us. It's a good thing!
Thanks ya'll. See you soon.

CHARACTER MATTERS II
Jennifer would not be happy without me mentioning "her crew." Of course the teachers who directly participate in the Friday afternoon rehearsals include Genevieve and Lisa. Happy and Teresa along with William from the district Technology Department played a huge role in the lighting and sound for the program. Her seamstresses, Mrs. Dishko and Ashley Guy also did a fantastic job. We are fortunate to have knowledgeable and talented people wanting us to succeed.
The Friday afternoon Drama Encore Club is hard for many reasons. Did you hear me say, "Friday afternoon?" The club leaders are very dedicated to our students and our school as a whole. Whenever Jennifer is given a task she always gives 100% with no complaints. Thanks, Jennifer.
Mason's Message
As an artist the above message is how I feel every time I stare at that blank canvas or that bag of clay. If I’m being honest; this is how I feel everyday. Every day is a blank canvas of unknowns and my job is to figure out how to compose the canvas the best way possible (problem solve). I will make mistakes, have to erase and re-paint things (get knocked down and get back up), take a step back and look at the progress (evaluate/reflect), ask someone to take a look and tell me what they think (seek help), add some detail here and there (stay focused), and all the while I have no idea if i’m doing it right, how it will turn out or if it will be any good. But you know what? It doesn’t stop me from plunging my heart and soul into finishing the work, even with all the unknowns.
Not every piece of art becomes a masterpiece, not every artist has a piece in a gallery or museum, and not every artwork created is sold; but this never stopped an artist from creating, staring at that blank canvas of unknown and going thru the process of creating something wonderful.
Be brave. Face the unknown square in the face and continue to challenge yourself and your students and create something wonderful.

With everything we do...
- Students should be receiving reading instruction in every class they attend. Hear is one test for finding out it reading is happening more than ever. If I were to ask your students individually and even better if a visitor asked your students individually, "Are you and your classmates reading more this year than you have in the past?" What would they say? What about writing more? What would they say? Interesting Read
- In and beyond the classroom, students should hear positive messages about how important their education is.
- Teachers must support the Positive Behavior Intervention System throughout the entire building - everyday in every class and throughout the entire building. You can do other positive things, but Paw Cards are not optional. Just like we expect students to walk on the right side of the hallways, not talk in the hallways, and wear the appropriate standard dress, we've asked you to use the Paw Cards and we expect it. Together, we have to make a difference in the discipline of our students. In the end it will be to your benefit for student behavior and ultimately academic achievement.
- The ARTS matter in the big picture for our students. The arts will make our brains better for learning. The improvement may be hard to see at the beginning but it will make us and them better learners. I appreciate those who took time in their PLC time together discussing Chapter One of Arts with the Brain in Mind. I heard a lot of great conversations especially with 2nd grade. We will be discussing Chapter Two during the week of October 23-27. Be prepared.
