Winter MAP Testing
As previously shared, Barrington220 will move forward with winter academic testing despite the pandemic. This data will help us guide student instruction. There are two testing options:
1. inviting students to come to school with safety protocols in place
2. testing remotely from students' usual workspace during distance learning
Students will be assessed according to the following schedule:
5th Grade students will take their reading test on February 1st.
5th Grade students will take their math test on February 8th.
4th Grade students will take their reading test on February 2nd.
4th Grade students will take their math test on February 9th.
3rd Grade students will take their reading test on February 3rd.
3rd Grade students will take their math test on February 10th.
2nd Grade students will take their reading test on February 4th.
2nd Grade students will take their math test on February 11th.
Students testing remotely will be assessed on the same days and times as students on-site. Please have them log in to their usual class’ zoom meeting and a staff member will provide directions for them to take the assessments. After finishing their test, remote students might start working on activities assigned by their classroom teacher.
Students testing in-person must complete the COVID-19 symptom screening Web App before leaving home, and arrive at Sunny Hill by 8:00 am each day they are scheduled for testing. We will begin the test promptly at 8:30 am and will be dismissing students at 10:30 am. Please note the following instructions for arrival and dismissal of students:

Videos for Literacy Support by Parents/Guardians
The Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP), creators of our reading and writing programs, have developed numerous videos for families and caregivers to bring more joy into literacy learning. We encourage parents and caregivers to watch these short videos. To access all videos created by TCRWP and additional resources, please refer to this link.
- K-2: Help Children Fall in Love With Reading - Rituals to Set Up at Home: In this video, Valerie describes a few at-home routines or habits parents can establish to help children engage (or re-engage) in reading, including side-by-side reading, reading the world and performing readings to friends and family.
- PreKinder - 1st Grade: Help Your Child Think Before, During, and After Reading: Amanda offers parents ways to support a child’s reading comprehension by emphasizing the value of rereading, suggesting conversations that can help before, during, and after rereading. This includes an example of Amanda reading with a child.
- 2nd - 5th Grade: How to Help Your Child Stay Focused While Reading: Hannah shares parent tips for increasing their kids' reading volume and stamina at home.
- 3-5: How to Have Natural Conversations With Your Kids About Books: In this video, Lizzie shares tips for talking with a child about their reading in ways that reinforce comprehension, while preventing the parent from becoming the teacher.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) ~ Mr. De La Mora, Assistant Principal
I hope that these first couple of weeks of our Hybrid 2.0 plan at Barrington 220 have gone well for you and your students. This month we are planning different activities to address the social and emotional needs of our students during these challenging times. These activities will be focused on reminding our Tigers of appropriate behaviors while they attend school (virtually or in-person). Please be on the lookout for our Daily Announcements where we will be sharing more about these exciting activities and the opportunities for our students to demonstrate the, “Tiger way.”
In last month’s newsletter I mentioned the series of presentations about Erin’s Law; these presentations needed to be rescheduled so will now take place from February 16th to February 26th. These will be led by our school Social Workers and Psychologist. During these presentations, students will learn about age-appropriate techniques to recognize personal body safety, how to speak up, share if there is a concern, and to tell a trusted adult. Thank you for all of your help!
We are all here to help you, and to give our students the opportunities to be the best version of themselves that they can be. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. De La Mora at (847) 426-4232 or via email at edelamora@barrington220.org.
