Salem Heights Elementary

Message from Principal Theis

Greetings everyone!

As summer comes to a close our building has filled with activity! Staff returned this week and were busily preparing the school for our students.

Just a reminder:

Although we will need to start the year in masks, we anticipate a fairly normal school year otherwise. I know our staff can't wait to have our students 5 days a week! This year there is even more to look forward to with the return of field trips, our makerspace STEM lab, and weekly mystery sales to support our school!

See below for important information regarding start up. We look forward to seeing you all next week!

Go Rascals!

Change to School Hours!

Our School Hours are changing!

School will be from 7:50am-2:20pm, with students allowed in for breakfast starting at 7:20am.

We will have a late start every Wednesday, 8:50am-2:20pm. This is a district-wide change that allows for weekly staff meetings.

Office hours are 7:00am-3:30pm.

A message from the district about these changes:

For the past several years, we have heard from our families and educators that they want a later start time for older students and an earlier start time for younger students. Research shows many benefits of later start times for middle and high school students and we needed to align our elementary schools to a similar schedule.

We believe that the new bell schedule will better serve the needs of students across the district and lead to improved outcomes at all levels.

All schools will start one hour late on Wednesdays to give school staff a regular time for collaborating and planning support for students.

If you have any questions about bell schedule adjustments for the 2021-22 school year, please contact your child’s school.

Class Lists!

Class lists will be posted tonight, Friday Sept. 3rd, at 5:00pm. Look for them on the front corner window as you approach from the parking lot.

You can also see your child's teacher through ParentVue at that time (but not which other students are in their class).

Big picture

Join us Tuesday, September 7th for back to school night!

Meet your child's teacher, see their classroom, and drop off school supplies so your student will have a smooth first day of school on September 8th.

In order to reduce the number of people, we are asking families with last name A-L to visit from 4:00-5:00pm, and families with last name M-Z to visit from 5:00-6:00pm.

We are also asking families to limit the number of visitors, to one adult with each child, if possible.

(Face masks are required)

Join ParentSquare!

Our school invites you to join ParentSquare, our new communication platform to connect families to the district, school and teachers. It will replace SchoolMessenger, Remind and any other texting/messaging apps that our school or teachers may have used in the past. It’s important to note that ParentSquare will not replace ParentVUE, StudentVUE, Canvas or Seesaw.

After registering, please take a moment and update your notification settings: select your name in the upper right corner, then "My Account", and then "Notification Settings". We would love for our families to sign up for text messaging, as this will reduce the number of voice calls we send to our families.

ParentSquare provides a safe way for administrators, teachers, staff and parents to:

  • Receive emergency notifications
  • Send and receive district, school and class information in your preferred language
  • Share pictures and files
  • Sign up for conferences
  • And much more… all in one place!

District, school, grade level and classroom information will be sent to your computer and/or phone via email and/or text. Or you can download the free iOS or Android app.

For more information, including user tutorials, please visit:

We look forward to hearing from you this year!

Bus Rider Registration 2021-22

Starting the first week of September, SKPS school buses will be hitting the road as students return to school for the 2021-22 school year! Will your child need transportation to or from school this year? There are a few quick and easy steps for you to take to ensure your child is ready to go on day one. Please visit our site:

At Salem Heights breakfast and lunch are free for all students through the end of the school year.

If your student brings a lunch and would like to buy a milk the cost will be $0.50.

Oregon families with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals will get pandemic food benefits. This includes students that attend a school where all students eat meals at school for free, children in foster care, children of migrant workers and youth experiencing homelessness.

After School Care

Y-Care will be providing after school care at our building this year from 2:20pm-6:00pm. You can find details, including pricing options, on the flyers below or on their website at theYonline.org.

Space is limited, so be sure to register your student soon to reserve their place in the program.

2020-21 Yearbooks

Last year our wonderful Parent Teacher Club purchased yearbooks for every student in our school!

We plan to distribute yearbooks during the first week of school.

As more students and staff return to in-person learning, face coverings are required when in a Salem-Keizer Public Schools building, with situational exceptions. All employees, students and visitors must continue to wear a face covering indoors, this includes sporting events.

All students, staff, volunteers and visitors are not required to wear face coverings outdoors. This includes, but is not limited to: athletic events, outdoor PE, outdoor music, recess and arrival & dismissal. Until additional updates are provided, all physical distancing and other related requirements still apply.

If a student needs a face covering, the school has them available for students.
