January 2014
Slater-Marietta Elementary Media Center Programming
4k and 5k classes
Students are learning about informational texts. They will learn how illustrations relate to the text and how to describe a connection between two events in a text. Our reading list this month will be:
All the Water in the World - George Ella Lyon
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind – William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
Brothers at Bat: The True Story of an Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team – Audrey Varnick
Belle, the Last Mule at Gee’s Bend: A Civil Rights Story – Calvin Alexander Ramsey and Bettye Stroud
1st and 2nd grade classes
Students in 1st and 2nd grade are also learning about informational text. They are learning how to find details from the text to answer questions, how to expand on previous knowledge by using details from the text, locate information by using text features, and determine meaning of words by using text features.
3rd-5th grade classes
Students are learning about using webquests to find information for their research. Students will be researching causes or effects of a war depending on their grade level. With this research they will create a TouchCast video using primary sources, inserting video and graphics, and creating a poll for viewers. They will be working on this in the media center and the computer lab with Ms. Boone. This project will take several weeks to finish.
