Stop! Thief! (Fair Use for Images)
Let's chat about using images and other items from internet and how that pertains to fair use:
"The Copyright Act gives copyright holders the exclusive right to reproduce works for a limited time period. Fair use is a limitation on this right. Fair use allows people other than the copyright owner to copy part or, in some circumstances, all of a copyrighted work, even where the copyright holder has not given permission or objects." - Fair Use FAQs for Educators
The bottom line is that just because you found it on the web or can make a copy of it, it does not mean it's legal to use. In this week's newsletter, we'll look at a few sources, beyond a filtered Google search, for you and your students to use to find images that are fine to use on websites, in presentations, and for other uses.

Fair Use Resources for Images
Pixabay has over 540,000 free photos, vectors and art illustrations. You can search for images by keyword and copy, distribute, and modify the images for free. "All images and videos on Pixabay are released free of copyrights under Creative Commons CC0. You may download, modify, distribute, and use them royalty-free for anything you like, even in commercial applications. Attribution is not required."
Photos for Class
Photos for Class is another website for finding images, but they also filter for safety. "Teachers have told us they need a place to access safe images that are available to be used in the classroom and for educational purposes. Plus, they want accurate image citations. We’ve heard you and created “Photos For Class” to meet your needs for images!
Canva is a design tool, but one of the best features (aside from how crazy easy it is to use) is that Canva has millions of stock photos, vectors, and illustrations that you can use for free in your designs (along with being to upload your own). No searching for free use images. They're all there in high-quality right within the program!
