REVISED COVID-19 Guidelines from the ADPH
The Alabama Department of Health (ADPH) has updated the School Toolkit guidelines related to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Covid-19 symptoms are now categorized as major symptoms or minor symptoms. Below is a summary of the changes and what they mean for our students, parents, and staff.
THE THREE MAJOR SYMPTOMS
The three major symptoms include a new cough, shortness of breath/respiratory distress, and a new loss of smell or taste. Students and staff with a confirmed case of COVID-19 or a suspected case that includes at least one major symptom will require close contact tracing for exposure to others and a report to ADPH. They will be placed in isolation from school and school activities and may return after the 10 day contagious period and at least one day fever free (without fever reducing medication) and symptom improvement. A negative test or note from a healthcare provider will not shorten isolation due to a positive case or major symptom.
Students and staff exposed through close contact to a confirmed positive case or exposed to a suspected case with at least one major symptom will be quarantined for 14 days as a close contact exposure. A negative test or a note from a healthcare provider cannot release a student or staff from an exposure quarantine due to the 14 day incubation period in which the virus can develop.
MINOR SYMPTOMS
Minor symptoms include fever, sore throat, chills, headache, body aches, runny nose/nasal congestion, stomach/abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students and staff with two or more minor symptoms will be asked to isolate at home and follow up with their healthcare provider for evaluation. They may return to school with a note of clearance from their health care provider. Quarantine of close contact exposures to minor symptoms is no longer required.
ADDITIONAL CHANGES
There are no quarantine requirements for those who may have had close contact with someone quarantined for exposure. However, it is encouraged to maintain social distance from those in quarantine for exposure in the event they develop symptoms and become a positive case.
Students and staff who have had an active case of COVID -19 in the past 30 days from the date of a potential exposure, are considered to have immunity and are exempt from quarantine up to 90 days following their infection.
All students following these guidelines may be excused for COVID-19 related symptoms, isolation, and quarantine after communication with the school.
**********************************
All students and staff with any COVID-19 symptoms are asked to contact their school nurse for guidance about next steps. It is important to self isolate for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection. It is also important to self quarantine if you have been exposed to a true case or significant suspected case.
Please contact your principal or school nurse by phone or email if you have been exposed, or need to report a diagnosis/symptoms, or have a question. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we continue to follow these guidelines in order to protect the health of our staff and students.
