Prohibition
Lifestyle during the prohibition era of the 1920's-30's
What was the prohibition?
The prohibition occurred on January 16, 1920, when the 18th amendment was ratified. This made alcoholic beverages illegal, yet underground establishments and private bars still served people.
Presidents
Started during the term of Woodrow Wilson, went through the terms of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. It ended when Franklin Roosevelt came into office.
Limited amounts
People were entitled to brew small amounts of wine at home, and government facilities could produce mass amounts for religious reasons, like Communion.
Bootlegging
The illegal brewing and importing of liquor is called bootlegging. President Harding, although had voted for prohibition, had the White House well stocked with bootleg liquor.
The End of Prohibition
In 1933, the 21st amendment was ratified, which repealed the 18th, therefore legalizing the manufacturing and sale of liquor. By 1966, all of the states had returned back to normal sale and consumption of liquor.
