In the Classroom
it's a great week in first grade! Our Friendship Party is on Friday! February is Dental Month and we are learning how to take care of our teeth and keep them healthy and strong!
Here are some important things to know this week:
Please help your child choose an important toy or object to bring to school. We will write a nonfiction story about this object. It should easily fit in your child's backpack. Your child will describe what it looks like and what he or she does with it.
Please help make our Friendship party a success! PTO is asking parents to send in $3.00 with their child to help buy supplies for our party. Thank you to everyone who has sent in their money!
Students are encouraged to make Valentines and decorate Valentine boxes or bags to bring to school on Friday! A list of student names went home on Friday in your child's orange folder.
Please continue to send in Box Tops! February is the last month for our contest. The class who has the most box tops wins a party!
Our class raised 33 soup cans for People Helping People! Thank you!
Learning This Week
Reading- This week students will use word clues to help determine who is telling the story. We will learn that a character or the author can tell the story. Some word clues are I, me, my, we, she, he, they, etc. By the end of first grade, students should be able to determine who is telling a story using clue words and pictures.
Writing- This week students will continue to explore writing nonfiction pieces. Students are observing an object from home and writing facts about what it looks like and what he or she does with the object. By the end of first grade, students should be able to write informative/explanatory texts with a topic, facts about the topic, and a closure.
Math- Students will count and write numbers through 120. Students will add and subtract tens and multiple of tens (ex: 50+10=60 or 80-30=50) By the end of first grade, students should be able to write and count from any number to 120. By the end of first grade, students should be able to mentally add or subtract 10 to a 2-digit number and explain their thinking.
Science- This week students will learn how to keep their teeth healthy and strong. February is Dental Month.
