Behavior/Classroom Management Corner: Six Opening and Closing Routines to Check for Understanding, Build Community, and Manage Your Students
FROM THE DESK OF TERRI MILLER.......
Teachers make more minute by minute decisions than brain surgeons...and that is why you’re going home so exhausted each day. ~Dr. Tina Boogren
Reading Workshop requires the same earnest and intentional effort as we use to establish norms for the classroom to ensure success for each student. Building a "reading community" in which students are independent is more likely when routines and procedures are purposeful and meaningful to students.
Make your teaching purposeful and meaningful for students by intentionally planning your minilesson. Your first “go-to” resource should be Schoolwide. Don’t forget to look at your digital resources on Schoolwide.com. Check it out!!
Intentional Planning: Minilesson
Choose a lesson
Locate standard, learning target, and lesson ideas in unit planner
Read Schoolwide lesson….Schoolwide is your primary resource to guide planning
This supports consistency across the district as well as vertical alignment
Plan for the gradual release (I Do, We Do, You Do) & make it your own
Student Led Conferences~
Here is a folder with all grade level student progress reports that you may want to consider using to inform parents of their child’s text level. It also has a form to send home to remind parents of the date and time of their conference.
A Step by Step Plan for Student Led Conferences at the Elementary Level is an excellent article on planning and preparing for student-led conferences. Check it out for some great ideas for on stations for parents to visit. This is a great way to make your student-led conferences interactive and engaging!
Conference questions for parents to ask their child during/after the student-led conference.
Data Cycle Plan~The plan is for your Data Cycle Team Leader to lead your team through the data cycle process and to document your meetings in the team binder. The goal is for you to eventually use this process in every content area. In the binder are sheets to document the data that is collected and a place to write what strategies you will be implementing. It also has a calendar for you to keep dates of when you will be giving Pre-tests, CFA’s, etc. Please support your team leader in this process and be engaged participants. I would appreciate an invite any time that you meet with your team. If I’m available, I would love to be a part of your data meetings. Please let me know if you have any questions.
My Daily Schedule~My daily schedule is linked here for you to view.
TWW~Agendas are linked. See the agenda for items to bring and discussions to prepare for.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in the classroom.
