Flagged Sites
It is currently the belief of our tech department to not over-restrict student access to the internet. We are compliant with CIPA regulations with the filtering we have in place. In fact, with GoGuardian, we have double filtering in many cases. However, no filter is 100%, and as "kids will be kids," they are often savvy enough to find other ways, ableit on their own personal device, or via ways of circumventing the filter.
Please remember that there is no filter that is as effective as the teacher in the classroom. Please be cognizant of this in your supervision of the students using devices, specifically in self-paced, independent work. As mentioned above, we aren't wanting to over-regulate students access for a variety of reasons, but to proactively and reactively use teachable moments to remind students that their decisions on the computer leave a digital footprint. While they may think they are operating in isolation and are invisible to others, they are, in fact, digital residue that can leave lasting traces. It is better we teach the students about this now, then to have them make bigger mistakes later on.
WHAT is Being Flagged?
A number of trends in student searching have been flagged, but the most common flag emanates from YouTube searches and students wanting to listen to music while they work. While logged in with their Medford account and on school property, we are still responsible for what students are being exposed to, including their choices in music. We will need to create a practice for students listening to music in the classroom to ensure what they are listening to is appropriate for school.
