November 2023
🧡 🧡 🧡
Dear Spring Hill Families,
An extra hour of sleep makes a difference for us all. I want to thank our families and staff who work tirelessly so that our students succeed. The holiday season is among us, and I'm excited (as are students) for the upcoming events. Spring Hill is home to students of many languages and religious beliefs. We will take the time to acknowledge many of the customs, foods, and traditions in the upcoming months. We encourage all students and staff families to observe and appreciate each other's religious beliefs.
Along with the winter holiday season comes cold weather. Thank you for preparing your child to go outside. Our teachers want students to enjoy recess comfortably rather than shivering in the cold. In Alaska, we are accustomed to unpredictable weather. Children will be expected to go outside for recess to a chill factor of –10 degrees. When the chill factor/temperature reaches 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, the children shall be admitted to the building upon arrival at school rather than at the regular opening time. Children will be expected to have appropriate winter clothing including warm headgear, insulated footgear, and gloves or mittens. A physician’s note is necessary to exclude a student from participation in outdoor activities.
The school district has relayed information regarding start times and middle school for next year:
There are many ways to stay involved in your child's education. Parents and Guardians, please continue to check Parent Connect for updates on your child's progress. There are ways to get "notifications" for your child's assignments. Encouragement and reminders go a long way. Every child needs strong routines and structures in place to help build independence, and we all do better when we know what to expect. You can also excuse your child's absence through the Parent Portal.

We also welcome parent volunteers; there is much behind-the-scenes work our teachers do to prepare for lessons every day. 5-10 minutes of material prep go a long way! Hoping you all have a wonderful November and stay warm!
Sincerely,
Lena Brower
Principal
Be prepared for the cold weather!
Winter is Here!
As a reminder, please send your child with winter gear (hat, boots, gloves or mittens, snow pants, and boots) daily! Pre-K, kindergarten, and all the way up to 6th grade students need proper gear.
Recess is 30 minutes a day, Monday-Friday.
ASD allows outdoor recess until temperatures reach negative 10 degrees.
Spring Hill does not have the coverage to offer indoor coverage for students without proper snow gear. If your child has a medical condition please work with Nurse Naomi and your provider to provide paperwork.
We are always looking for Noon Duties to assist and help cover recess. If you enjoy working with children and are able to be outside, we would love to have you apply! Days and times are flexible. Please apply at, Service High Temporary:

Health Screenings
Per district guidelines, health screenings are conducted at specific grade levels. The majority of these checks center around growth, hearing and vision. The purpose of this is to ensure that there aren’t any correctable physical barriers to a child’s learning in the classroom. Often times, difficulty in schoolwork can be traced back to vision or hearing difficulties, and we want to do everything we can to help your child succeed at their highest level. At this point in the school year, almost all students have been screened. If specialist follow up is necessary, you will be notified with a phone call and results will be sent home in paper form with your child. Please make every effort to keep me up to date as you make appointments and receive follow up results on your child. If you ever have any questions about your child’s health and how that may be affecting their learning please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
Happy November! I hope you all enjoy some time with friends and family over Thanksgiving,
Nurse Naomi Gerwin, RN
