Happy New Year!
I hope you had a wonderful break with your family!
If the students have homework, they will have a red folder in their backpack marked, "homework." They should complete the homework at home and then put it right back in the red folder to bring back to school. I am trying to teach the students to be organized! Only homework will go in the red homework folder. All other papers will go in their daily take home folders. You can help at home by assisting them with cleaning out their backpacks every night :)
In December, we harvested our classroom garden! We have been learning about goods, services, producers and consumers in our Social Studies class. We are the "producers" who grew the garden, took care of the garden, harvested the plants and sold the produce. The people in our school are the "consumers" who bought our goods. Our vegetable stand was a great culminating activity for the students to learn how the whole process works. We had many discussions about economy and learning about supply and demand!
Right before winter break, we had a school wide PBIS party! As you know, the students earn tickets for being safe, responsible, and respectful at school. For every 10 tickets they get, they add a "car" to our school-wide race track. When the whole school fills up the race track, the whole school has a PBIS party together. The students love celebrating with the other classes! Sometimes the students use their tickets at our PBIS store. You may have noticed your children coming home with little toys and fun things they purchased at the store with their tickets. Sometimes the students choose to save their tickets and purchase lunch (McDonalds, Panda Express, etc.) with a staff of their choice. We have a lot of safe, responsible and respectful students at John Powers!
Brr.... It is cold outside! Now that the weather is cold, please remember to send a hat, gloves and a warm coat to school with your child. The students go out to recess every day unless the "feels like" temperature is below 10 degrees! They will stay inside for recess if the "feels like" temperature is below 10 degrees. It could be pretty cold outside! If they would like to play in the snow, they need to bring snow pants, snow boots and warm gloves. I have some hats and gloves that they are welcome to borrow if they forget theirs at home!
The students need to have gym shoes if they want to participate in PE. You are welcome to leave a pair of gym shoes here at school to be used during PE. Some students are coming to school with boots and loafers. Unfortunately, they are not allowed on the gym floor if they don't have gym shoes on.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

Literacy/Literatura
During writing lessons, we are learning to strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. During editing, we are reinforcing the rules for demonstrating command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
1. Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names
2. Use commas
3. Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives
4. Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing
We are learning to expand our sentences. We are learning to use words such as "and" and "because" in our sentences to create more compound sentences.
We are continuing our study of folktales. During guided reading lessons, the students are reading myths, fairy tales, trickster tales, pourquoi tales, tall tales and fables. As a group, we are comparing and contrasting the stories we read together. The students are really enjoying reading about this genre of books!
We continue to work on the Bilingual Grammar Curriculum ASL & English. This is an awesome curriculum that really helps the students with their writing. Currently, we are learning about adjectives and adverbs.
Estamos aprendiendo a expandir nuestras oraciones.
MATHEMATICS Matematicas
2nd Grade
The students have started a unit on place value. In this unit, we will be learning about place value (ones, tens, hundreds), comparing numbers and solving addition and subtraction problems to 100. As always, we will be practicing by solving every day word problems. We are also discussing how to assess the reasonableness of answers.
3rd Grade
We are continuing to work on multiplication and division concepts. We are learning to interpret the quotient as the number of objects in each group. The students are learning skip count objects in models to build fluency facts. And, we are modeling the relationship between multiplication and division. Next, we will be solving 2 step word problems involving all four operations.
2do. grado
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Estudios Sociales
We are finishing up our unit on Communities, Producers and Consumers by completing an iMovie of what we have learned. Our next unit will be "Weather." We will be learning about weather patterns and recording weather. We will learn about meteorological tools. We will be discussing weather related hazards and natural disasters.
