World War I

Two key people were Woodrow Wilson and Samuel Sampler. Woodrow Wilson was the president during World War I and got the nation through the war. Samuel Sampler was a soldier who single-handedly knocked out a German machine gun position that had his unit pinned down. He also killed a pair of German soldiers and captured more than two dozen others.


France, Great Britain and Russia joined together to fight the forces of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The United States stayed neutral but when they entered the war they joined the side of France, Great Britain and Russia.


What caused the U.S. to enter World War I?

Brittain intercepted a telegram from Germany to Mexico that promised Mexico lost land including Texas

How did Texas play an important role during the war?

Texas supplied a greater amount of men and women to the war in uniform

How did World War I end?

Germany surrendered on November 1918 and Germany and the allied nations signed the treaty of Versailles

The Great Depression

Herbert Hoover's involvement in the Great Depression - He worked nonstop trying to fix the economy. He founded government agencies, encouraged labor harmony, supported local aid for public works, fostered cooperation between government and business in order to stabilize prices, and struggled to balance the budget.


How did FDR pull the country out of the depression?

He created the National Resources Planning Board

What caused the Dust Bowl and how did it affect farmers in Texas?

Farmers consisted on deep plowing which pulled native, deep-rooted grasses which held the soil down. It affected farmers because the Dust Bowl killed lots of crops

How were tenant farmers and miners affected by the Great Depression?

Tenant farmers would have a hard time making money with the stocks. Miners were affected by the Great Depression because the unemployment would take many people's jobs

World War II

Hitler was one important person who was the chancellor of Germany at the time. Also Harry Truman was important, he became the president after FDR, from when FDR died through the end of the war.


How did Texas contribute to the nation's military effort in fighting World War II?

Texas supplied the most men and women to the armed service

How did life change for Texas on the homefront during World War II?

Military post sprang up statewide to support the war

How did World War II end?

Hitler committed suicide and the Germans surrendered
