Last night at our School Committee meeting, Emmanuel "Manny" Crespo was presented with the Butterfly Award, given annually to an educator in Chelsea who exemplifies the qualities of creative ideas, innovative instructional practices, and strong support of their colleagues. The award is given in memory of Carolyn Arond.
Mr. Crespo has been all this and more as an educator at the George F. Kelly Elementary school, teaching in Chelsea since 1996 (when the Kelly School opened its doors!). Watch the video above to view the award presentation, including a speech from Mr. Crespo himself. New Educator Orientation
There was a Student Panel during New Educator Orientation. The students that volunteered to help our new educators were generous with their time and very well-spoken. They gave thoughtful answers and were the perfect voices to end the week hearing from! They talked about the importance of making authentic connections with students and building relationships. They also spoke about how they know that a teacher truly cares, what makes a teacher memorable, and even gave some tips on how to best deal with homework and cell phones in class. We also got tips about the restaurants and bodegas to make sure to check out in Chelsea! The Mentoring Program wants to send a HUGE THANK YOU to the students that gave up some of their last precious hours of summer to help welcome our new educators to Chelsea and get them started on the path to success!
