War breaks out against the Stiffs

Don't believe in what you see, There are two sides to a story

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, the author shows the theme don't believe in what you see. There are five factions that each person, when they are 16, will be selected into - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice, the main character in this book, was born into an Abnegation family. Her parents expect her to be selected into the same faction because of her acts of selflessness. When she selects her faction, she chooses Dauntless. Her parents believed that she would be Abnegation, but she proved them wrong. Two quotes that show this are:

"I train my eyes on the floor and stand behind the Dauntless-born initiates who chose to return to their own factions... But I have to see my parents one more time. I look over my shoulder at the last second before I pass them, and immediately wish I hadn't. My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation. At first, when I feel the heat behind my eyes, I think he's found a way to set me on fire, to punish me for what I've done, but no-I'm about to cry."

"He turns to me. His dark, straight eyebrows draw together so that a crease appears between them. When he frowns, he looks more like my mother than my father. In an instant I can see him living the same kind of life my father did: staying in Abnegation, learning trade, marrying Susan, and having a family. It will be wonderful. 'Are you going to tell me the truth now?' he asks softly.

Divergent is a book where one decision shapes your future, you walk the path you create.

At the start of the book, Beatrice who is a sixteen year old girl is going though a process where she could choose to either stay in her faction or choose a new one. Instead of staying in her faction, she chooses Dauntless, a faction about bravery. On a train to go the the Dauntless headquarters, she meets a girl named Christina, a girl that chose Dauntless as well. At the headquarters she has an option to rebuild her image, she renames herself to Tres. She also meets their groups leader Four. During their first stage of practice, Tris meets the rest of the teenagers who also chose Dauntless. There she meets Peter, Drew, and Molly. These three had the most grudge against Tris. She also meets Will and Al, who became her closest friends. While she was in training, she meets a leader named Eric, who is a merciless leader and only cares about how the fraction is appeared to look like. Tris is put through trials where she was facing death more than once. The night the rankings were announced, Tris is captured by the voices of Peter and Drew, also Al, who betrayed her. She was almost thrown into the chasm, but was saved by Four. Four announces to Tris his true feelings about her and they fall in love together. The next day, Al begs for forgiveness the next day, but Tris threatens him. That night, he threw himself into the chasm, killing himself. All of Dauntless was then ejected with a liquid, including Tris. Everyone wakes up one night and appears to be sleepwalking, except for Tris, who was understanding what happened. She was a part of an unknown faction called Divergent which fought against the ejected liquid. Tris and her friends come together to stop a war between Dauntless and Erudite and Abnegation.
