Hello, from Mrs.B!
ELA and Social Studies Updates
1st ELA Vocabulary Quiz this Wed
We have a lot going on in ELA this week. On Wednesday we have our first vocabulary quiz. Hopefully your child has been studying daily for the past two weeks. I have expressed daily the importance of completing the bingos and studying daily for this quiz. It may be different than the types of vocabulary quizzes they are accustomed to. They will not be required to simply find or supply a definition they have memorized. We require the students to prove their knowledge by applying the word's meaning in the following ways: compare/contrast 2 vocab words, provide a illustration of the meaning of the word, or fill in the blanks within a paragraph with the correct word. In short, memorizing the definition will not be enough. They have to understand what the word means, in a meaningful way, so they can apply it within different activities.
Vocabulary Quizzes account for 20% of your students overall ELA grade. These types of assessments are a learned skill. Some students require a time to learn how to apply their knowledge in this format. Please don't panic if their do not succeed on their first quiz. They will get better as they learn the expectations.
On Thursday I will send home the new vocabulary list and the next test will be on 8/14.

I have attached some of the resources we have used in class and we will continue to practice and review in class. Students can log into StudyIsland.com to practice these skills as well. the students have their login in their binders. I will also send home a study sheet for the test.

Social Studies
In social studies we will be working on Lesson 2 in Chapter 1. Your child will have social studies homework every night this week. It will consist of reading 2 pages ( approx. 4-5 paragraphs), learning the vocab and discussing what is happening with you. Even if I give them time in class to read their social studies I always tell them to take it home and either reread or discuss with you what they read. Please check your student's planner every night and follow up with them.
Every week we have a 5 question quiz to check the students understanding of the lesson we worked on that week. This week they will be quizzed on lesson 2 chapter 1.
