Character Education Theme
December’s Character Themes of the month are Honesty and Integrity. Honesty means being trustworthy, loyal, fair and sincere. Integrity means the quality of being honest and having strong ideals of wrong and right even when no one is watching. Two students from classrooms will be nominated to have lunch with Mrs. Flynn this month for representing Honesty & Integrity.

Tice Math Corner...Staying Connected during Winter Vacation
The students at Tice Elementary have been learning their math facts over the last three months. Why is it important for students to know math facts fluently? Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the basic facts in all four operations accurately, quickly and effortlessly. Once students have learned their math facts, they are able to retrieve them without any effort, freeing up their brain to be able to solve harder problems
- Math fact fluency leads to higher order math:
A lack of fluency in basic math fact recall hinders a child’s progress with problem-solving, algebra and higher-order math concepts.
- Fluent math facts mean less confusion:
Math facts are the basic building blocks for higher-level math concepts. When a child masters his math facts, concepts become easier and he will be able to solve problems faster. If the child spends a lot of time doing the basic facts, he is more likely to be confused with the processes and will get lost in his calculations.
- Less math anxiety:
Just as you learn to combine letters into words and words into sentences - - math facts are the foundation blocks for learning the next level of math. There is rote learning involved in both language and math mastery. Math anxiety starts when children fall behind and can’t keep up. To avoid these anxieties, student’s early elementary years should focus on learning the foundation math skills needed for later years -- math facts are among those important math skills.
Let’s help our students at Tice Elementary become successful Mathematicians —So let’s get out the flash cards and practice our math facts! ~Mrs. Walding
