Principal's Message

Dear Jackie Robinson K-8 Community,

We did it! The final week of school is upon us. What a year it has been with the challenges we encountered, new learning gained and celebrations. Nothing about this year has been easy, but our collective work, grace we have given one another, and commitment to putting students first helped us along the way.

I will enjoy our final week of school with our in-person and online students as I know we will be having many celebrations. It is great to know that many of our teachers will dedicate time to recapping memorable moments they experienced with their class.

Kinder Celebration - Monday, June 14 - 9:00 - 10:30am

5th Grade Promotion - Monday, June 14 - 12:30 - 2:00pm

8th Grade Promotion - Wednesday, June 16 - 11:00am

(More details below)

A reminder that face coverings will remain in place for all vaccinated and unvaccinated persons attending the promotion ceremonies. I appreciate your support!

They say that all good things must come to an end... in a year that has been challenging for all on so many levels, I want everyone to know how proud I am of our Robinson team.

- Our young Dolphins have been simply amazing! Despite the odds, they rose to the occasion and kept learning. They found the resiliency to remain engaged and connected with their teachers. It never got easier for them... they just found ways to get better!

- Our parents have done a fantastic job of supporting our Dolphins from home. Your responsiveness and level of commitment to our learning community led to our school owning the attendance trophy for SIX consecutive months. Thank you!

- Our Robinson support staff has done an incredible job responding to the ever changing guidance from state and local officials. From the tremendous task for our Custodial team to clean and sanitize our work spaces, to our Recreational Aides and Nursing team helping with COVID screenings, to our Office/Support staff assisting with keeping it all together.

- There are teachers... then there is Robinson teachers! Our Robinson teaching staff went above and beyond for our Dolphins this year as evidenced by the amazing classroom culture created despite so many challenges. The hours upon hours of work dedicated to the learning needs of students is an example of the respect and professionalism they hold themselves to. Many parents either told me during my Principal Zoom meetings or via email of how appreciative they were of the work our teachers were doing. Simply put... Robinson teachers are second to none!

To our staff leaving us this year, know that I could not have asked for a better set of individuals to teach and nurture our students during this time. You have left your mark at Robinson and I know that you will continue to do amazing work in your future endeavors. It has been a privilege working with you and know that you will always receive a warm welcome at Robinson.

Once a Dolphin... always a Dolphin!

Sincerely,

Sal Madrigal

Atentamente,

Salvador Madrigal

Mr. Weeks is retiring!!!

Big picture

Mr. Weeks started as a long-term substitute teacher for LBUSD in the early 1990’s. He taught third grade at Bryant Elementary for 7 years, taught third-grade Japanese students at Katoh Gakuen in Numazu, Japan for four years, and came to Jackie Robinson Academy in 2004. He has always relished the fact that the school was named after a man from his old neighborhood in Pasadena—and a man who did almost as much for Civil Rights in his own way as MLK Jr. did in his way.

Mr. Weeks indicated that he will miss the Robinson community, but is already planning a film project about the life of his friend, Miguel Garcia—another Civil Rights icon.

Mr. Weeks, on behalf of the Robinson community, thank you for your 17 year service to our Dolphin family. Wishing you much success in your future endeavors!

Robinson Teaching Staff on the move...

Some end of year fun with our Dolphins!

Library Information

Hi JROB friends,

A couple of reminders and resources to share:

  1. Library Books: there are still quite a few library books out from before the closure, and some from this year. If you could kindly remind your kids to bring them back, it would be greatly appreciated. I will be able to collect them next week as I continue packing up the library. I've attached an image you can put on your canvas page if you'd like.
  2. Summer Fun: Here is a choice board with some great resources from the LBPL, https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ToijQ_meNTYFopqxo7VCKM9N4CTO_v59Sb_OVfdYS_4/edit?usp=sharing
  3. While my read aloud are intended mostly for the kids, I picked one last book that is meant for everyone at my two sites. Please share with your classes if you can.
