Top Ten Tips to Make Math Easy
Probability
Tree Diagram is an organized list of all possible outcomes.
You can use the Counting principle to find a large number of outcomes.
Example:
You have 5 shirts, 4 pairs of pants and 2 pairs of shoes.
5 x 4 x 2 = 40 different outfits
Probability
Experimental Probability
What is the probability of spinning and landing on orange?
There is one orange and 5 colors so 1/5 chances of landing on orange.
What is the probability of tossing an even number?
There are 3 even numbers on a dice (2, 4, 6).
There are 6 outcomes on a dice (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
The probability would be 3/6 or 1/2.
What is the probability of landing on heads?
There are 2 outcomes (heads and tails).
You have one head so 1/2.
Complement of an Event
There are 1/6 chances of tossing a dice and the dice lands on 5.
What is the probability of "not landing on a 5" ? 5/6
The event "not landing on 5" is the complement of the event " landing on 5."
Making Predictions from Data
The probability of Dustin getting a hit when he comes to bat is 70%.
How many hits should he expect to get if he comes to bat 700 times?
70% means 70/100 or 7/10 so 7/10 x 700/1 = 4900/10 = 490 times
TCAH has 2,000 6th graders. A random survey showed 50 of 250 6th graders went on the Financial Literacy field trip at Sam Houston University.
Predict the number of 6th graders out of the 2,000 students that would go on the field trip.
Scale factor method:
50 = X
250 2000 .............2000/250=8
so 50 x 8 = 400 students
Butterfly method:
50 x 2000 / 250 =
Independent Events
What is the probability of tossing a dice and getting a number < 4 and then tossing again and getting a 6? Which is written as P(<4,6)
There are 6 outcomes.
3/6 or 1/2 chances of getting a number <4 (1, 2 and 3) and 1/6 chances of getting a 6 so
1/2 x 1/6 = 1/12
