UOI 1: Who We Are

Transdisciplinary Theme:

An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.


Central idea: There are rights and responsibilities of being a member of a community.

UOI Field Trip Reflection

This UOI we went to Butlers Orchard's pumpkin patch. Students made connections to community, community jobs, and how a community meets its needs in class. Students learned how a community gets it's food and how farms, and those who run them, help communities through providing food, livestock, and other necessities. Some of the questions we explored were: How farms rely on community and how communities rely on farms. Why some jobs require special tools, and some tools can be used for more than just one job.

What have we been up to this Unit?

The writing Process

Students have spent a lot of time working on the writing process and how to publish their work this unit. Students will be using this foundation lesson throughout the year to perfect their writing in many areas from formal to informal writing. This is a process and we have certainly spent a great amount of time generating writing!

Adding and Subtracting to 100

Students explored grouping of integers when adding and subtracting. We worked with many different strategies on how to solve equations and identify when we will be required to regroup them. Students learned many mental math tricks including:


  • how to identify fact families,
  • draw out the equation
  • use patterns to help them solve

Managebac

As we are all familiarizing ourselves with managebac I hope that we are finding it useful and informative! Remember that the light green assignments are homework, dark green are events, yellow is classwork, and red is our assessments! Please keep in mind that managebac shows a small snippet of what we are doing in the classroom with a description and any resources to help parents make connections from school to home. The resources given are not mandatory homework just extensions. Homework will always be clearly labeled and in the light green shade on your calendar. You can expect to know what specific areas your child might need to work in from comments on specific assignments and what areas they excelled in which is a much higher quality of information. Soon all students will have their own login so they can also check in on managebac and participate in discussion forums at home. If you are still having trouble with managebac please feel free to stop by and speak to our Mrs. Elkordy our administrative assistant to see if she can offer support in any way.

What to expect next......

In the next few weeks we will be:


  • Starting our second investigation in Science exploring how liquids behave, and identifying properties of liquids. Students will use tools to measure liquid and find puddles in the environment and explore their properties and how they are formed.
  • Delving deeper into our unit of inquiry into communities by exploring how our different opinions and beliefs impact how we interact in our community and how communities function differently around the world based on individual and community beliefs.
  • Working in Module 2 in which students engage in activities designed to deepen their conceptual understanding of measurement and to relate addition and subtraction to length.
  • Continuing our work with the writing process and work on Linking words in our writing. We will be building resources and identifying goals individually through our literacy program Daily Five. Students will begin their work on using linking words in their writing as well as work with compound words and their meaning.

UOI SUMMATIVE


  • Our end of unit summative is coming up and students will be completing an opinion writing piece demonstrating all that they have learned from this unit and applying this learning into personal action. Summatives will take place in the classroom and can not be done at home however if you would like to help prepare your child please feel free to discuss the central idea, lines of Inquiry and connections to actions with real world examples within their home and family. Students can also share what things they have talked about in school and what things they have learned about families, communities, roles, and how these things help us meet our needs. Please review the assignment description and rubrics on Managebac by clicking on the calendar and looking for the date October 21st which is the day it will be due. We will be working on it over the last two weeks of the Unit.

WAY TO TAKE ACTION!

A Special shout-out to those grade two students who were recognized for turning in their passports fully completed and on time at our Jummah assembly this week! Those who weren't able to finish can try again this month with the passport for INQUIRER!
