District seeks more feedback on school start times

Last year, the district received a written request, signed by 200 parents, to investigate the possibility of moving to a later start time for middle and high school students. The request was based on research and a recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The research concludes that later school start times benefit teenagers because of changing sleep patterns.

No decisions have been made on this proposal. The board and administration have agreed that another round of feedback will add value to the decision-making process.

We are asking you to reflect on the schedule, read the Q&A that explains our thinking, and offer your perspective in the survey located on our website:

Please complete the survey by Sunday, Dec. 2. The school board will review this feedback throughout December and January, and likely make a decision in February.

Adverse Weather Routes - Dry Run 12/6 morning

The district plans to do a test run of its adverse weather routes on Thursday, Dec. 6 for the morning routes only.

Please review the adverse weather routes that are posted on our website. Your child will need to meet its morning bus at the stop listed on the adverse weather route schedule. Buses will revert to their normal stops in the afternoon.

We are practicing use of our adverse weather routes so that you and your child can become familiar with them in the event we need to use them for a real weather-related emergency.

For more information on the district's emergency/ closure procedures, please visit our website:

If you have any questions about the adverse weather routes, please contact our Transportation Department at (360) 503-1151.

Kaleidoscope Play & Learn Group

Kaleidoscope Play & Learn© groups help families prepare their young children (birth to age 5) for success in school and life. This program, based on scientific evidence, reaches families in their neighborhoods at weekly, facilitated playgroups.

At a Kaleidoscope group, children have fun participating in activities and being around their peers. Family members learn about:

● Activities they can do at home to support children’s learning

● Turning everyday activities- such grocery shopping, cooking and bath time- into early learning opportunities

● Child development from birth to five

● Skills children are expected to have when they start school

● Community programs and services available to help them raise healthy children

Kaleidoscope Play and Learn group will be offered at Fidalgo DanceWorks Annex, located at 909 3rd St., Anacortes. The program is free of charge and will be held on Tuesdays 11:00-12:15, October 16 through December 11, 2018.

For more information, contact Nicole Mortimer:

This program is made possible through a partnership between Anacortes School District and Fidalgo DanceWorks and sponsored by Kiwanis Noon Club.
As a courtesy, the Anacortes School District posts information here for non-school related community events and information that benefits students. The district does not necessarily endorse or sponsor any of these activities.
