How a computer works.
What this leaflets about...
This leaflet is to help you find out more about how a computer works. This will include telling you about how the sound and colour works and how the things you type or click on input into the computer.
Computer Monitor
A monitor or a display is an electronic visual display for computers. This means that a monitor is the screen that shows you what your doing.
Computer Drive
A drive is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without driver, the hardware you connect to your computer—for example, a video card or a printer—won't work properly.
central processing unit (CPU)
The central processing unit (CPU) is the brain of your computer. It handles all the instructions you give your computer, and the faster it does this, the better.
RAM/ROM
Random access memory (RAM) is the best known form of computer memory. RAM is considered "random access" because you can access any memory cell directly if you know the row and column that intersect at that cell.
Motherboard
The Motherboard itself is a printed circuit board that allows the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components to communicate with each other.
Software
All computers need a set of instructions to follow in order to run or even boot up. These instructions are called "software code" or just "software" for short.
Operating system
The operating system is a software program that manages the components of a computer system and its resources.
Graphic card
This is a device which fits into an expansion slot on the Motherboard and can be used to produce high quality displays for your monitor.
Touchscreen
A touch screen is the only device which can be classed as both an input and an output device. It consists of a display monitor that is able to sense the location of a finger touching the screen.
