November 1-November 30, 2019 - Volume 1 Edition 3
"Let the Countdown Begin"
The beginning of the 3rd 6 weeks begins on Wednesday, November 6th. As we countdown to the end of the 1st semester, it is imperative that you support us with making sure your scholar is progressing academically. We have covered a lot of material that is the foundation for what is to come next semester.
Given this, we are officially rolling out our after-school tutorial program in November. We have identified several scholars who MUST attend tutorials to assist them with being academically prepared. However, teachers will extend invitations to other scholars who need additional support. All scholars who stay after school will be provided supper free of charge. In addition, bus transportation will be provided for all scholars who normally ride a bus. The after school bus will drop off the scholars at the elementary school nearest their home.
Please look out for a detailed tutorial letter that will be brought home by your scholar and mailed. I encourage you to partner with us as we pull out all stops to ensure our scholars are successful and our goals are met.

"Closing the Generational APP Gap"
On Monday, October 21st, our scholars facilitated their first session which focused on "Personalizing Your Device." The scholars and seniors alike learned a lot and established positive bonds. Our scholars will be connecting with the seniors once a month until March 2020.
We are extremely proud of our student leaders and their willingness to share their love for technology with our community. Stay tuned for more pictures and testimonies.

Building Student's Note-taking Skills:
AVID’s focused note-taking process has five phases:
- Taking notes
- Processing notes
- Connecting Thinking
- Summarizing and Reflecting on Learning
- Applying Learning
It is important to note that applying learning is the last phase of the process. It is essential that it informs the first phase, as the note-taking format should be shaped by the note-taking purpose. When this is done, note-taking becomes a powerful and portable learning tool your student can carry with them throughout their educational experience.

Interact
Interact is a community service organization, brought to our campus by Jarrod Collins, assistant principal. It focuses on providing opportunities for our scholars to positively engaged with the community.
The first of many events was held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 when our scholars engaged the residents of Mariposa in "Cards and Conversations." Mariposa is a senior living apartment complex located across the street from our campus. Many of the residents do not have opportunities to converse with teenagers, and many of our teenagers do not willfully initiate conversations with seniors. As a result, "Cards and Conversations" was a win-win.
For more information or to share possible engagement opportunities, please reach out to Mr. Collins at jcolli2@springisd.org.
