On behalf of our North Wales community, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to our families for all of the love and appreciation bestowed upon us last week. Our Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week was amazing and I can say we are truly grateful to have you as our partners in education.

Cultural Highlights For The Week
Asian American and Pacific Islander Month
Assunta Ng- Assunta Ng is Chinese American community organizer and the publisher of Northwest Asian Weekly and Seattle Chinese Post, based in Seattle's Chinatown/International District.
In 1971 at age 19, she immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong to attend the University of Washington . Ng wanted to relocate to the U.S. because her parents had low expectations for daughters and Ng did not want to become a housewife, which was what was modeled to her as she was growing up. At that time, she had the perception that only in America could a woman be free. She wrote for the Daily Newspaper while at the UW, and she earned a bachelor's degree in International Studies and Education from the UW in 1974, a teaching certificate in 1976, and a master's degree in Communications in 1979.
In 1982, Ng started with $25,000 of her own seed money and founded the Seattle Chinese Post. A year later in 1983, Ng founded the Northwest Asian Weekly, a Pan-Asian English-language weekly. After 41 years of service, Ng has decided to retire and close the print paper.

Virtual Enrichment Summer Opportunity- Registration is Open
To promote continuous learning over the summer, NPSD will be offering a summer enrichment opportunity for all elementary students who have completed grades K-6 in the 2022-2023 school year. This free virtual program is designed to be completed asynchronously, with the engagement of families. Our goal is to provide independent, engaging activities throughout the summer that are the perfect blend of academics and fun in order to best support continued growth for our students.
The program will offer four weeks of content starting on Monday July 3rd. New content will be posted every Monday. Registration will be required, and a link will be posted for families by May 15th to register their child. All information will also be posted to the NPSD website, and promoted through social media outlets. While the information is not posted yet, we want you to be able to promote it while sharing summer ideas and talking to your families. Please remember, this is different from SPARK, which is our in-person summer remediation program, and students must be invited to participate in that program.
Once the program begins, students will have access to four weeks of themed choice menus with activities that are aligned to grade level standards in ELA and Math, and will also incorporate movement, creativity, and more! Students will also have the opportunity to work through their personalized learning pathway on iReady for math and Freckle for ELA.

Smart Watch/ Cell Phone Reminder
We have seen a growing number of students using electronic devices and sending/receiving text messages throughout the day, which has disrupted the learning environment. Please note, cell phones should be in silent mode or turned off and stored in bookbags throughout the day. Smartwatches should not be used to make calls, send messages, or take photos/videos during the school day. Also, note the school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal electronic devices. Our school team will be reminding our students of these expectations regarding personal devices.
We thank all of our families for their continued support and cooperation in limiting disruptions to the classroom.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
