School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Our Project Care focus for the whole month will be creating a bully free school.
In its most basic form, bullying is repeated, overt acts or behaviors that are meant to hurt someone physically, emotionally, or socially. Bullying can take place anywhere: at home, on the bus, at school, or even at the playground in the local neighborhood. We are encouraging students at Pendleton Elementary to step up and do something and be a Kid Against Bullying. Did you know that when someone sees bullying and they choose to do something to help, over 57% of the time the bullying will stop? That is why we are trying to teach the students to do something when they see bullying, it is not only the right thing to do, but also the responsible thing to do!
Please have conversations with your student about the following ways to do something to help when someone is being bullied:
1. SPEAK UP -If they SEE something, meanness or bullying, they should Speak Up and say something by telling the student doing the bullying or meanness that his/her behavior is mean and that the other student doesn’t deserve to be treated that way. If the behavior doesn’t stop or if they are afraid to speak up, then they should SAY something to the first teacher or staff member that they see.
2. REACH OUT- If they see a student being bullied or if someone tells them they are being bullied, they should reach out to that student, listen to their feelings, and do something to help. They should try to include them in activities and help keep them around friends and away from the bully.
3. BE A FRIEND- Whenever they see bullying or someone who is not included in activities or in groups, they should be a friend. They should invite them over, include them, get to know them, and be there to support them. If needed they should help them report the bullying by going up to a teacher with them or by doing it themselves if the victim is too afraid.
Help you student understand that true bullying must be reported. Telling is not tattling when they are trying to stop bullying.
Until next week……….
