School Reopening

As shared last week, Senate Bill 37 requires us to offer in-person instruction and a virtual option for K-12 students. If this bill passes we will need to prepare for the return of students to the building. The first step in the process is to determine who would like to return to in-person learning and who would like to remain virtual. The district is putting out a survey to families early this week. Please take a few minutes and complete the survey as soon as possible; the sooner we have this information the better we can plan for the safe return of students and staff. Keep in mind the choice you make is for the remainder of the school year. Please know we will do our best to keep students with their current classroom teacher but understand it will likely not be possible for every student. Right now the plan would be for students to return to school for four days a week with Wellness Wednesday's still in place.

Even though the state has us returning under Plan A (minimal social distancing) please know we will continue to adhere to the CDC guidelines. All students and staff will wear masks. We will minimize movement around the building and keep children with their same cohort of students as much as possible. For example, students will eat in the classrooms and not in the cafeteria. There are still a lot of specific details to work out and I will share those details as they become available.

While there may naturally, and understandably, be some angst about returning to school in-person after being out for so long, please keep in mind that research indicates we can open schools safely. Fortunately, we have the virtual option for any family who is not ready to return to in-person learning at this time. We will be ready for our students to come back and rest assured I will do everything I possibly can to keep our Easley students, staff, and families safe.

What’s next?

1. District leadership will continue to monitor the bill and provide updates as we have them.

2. The preference survey will be released this week and is due by February 24th.

3. We will work with our district leadership to revise and finalize our return plan.

As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. Bugajski or me. If you are on the fence about returning, I encourage you to speak to your child's classroom teacher as they know your child well and can answer your questions. You do not have to make this decision in a vacuum. We are happy to provide any kind of guidance or support we can to help you make the right decision for your child and family.

Media Update

Monday 2/15 is a teacher workday/remote learning day, so we will not be out at pickups. We will leave a return bin and any books ready on the purple cart in the back parking lot. Please take only the bag with your child’s name.

Ms. Hartley visited several 1st-5th grade classes recently to ask them questions about their reading habits. We’d love to hear from parents as well! Please take the time to fill out this survey (Kindergarten parents received a separate survey but you are welcome to do this one as well)

You have an option to include your email, one participant will be chosen at random to win a $5 Starbucks gift card. The winner will be notified after the survey closes on 2/17/21. Thank you to everyone that has done it so far!

Answers from this survey will hep the library staff develop programs and make budgeting decisions. Direct any questions to caroline_hartley@dpsnc.net . Thank you!
