Wimmer's Weekly
English IV, Writing Skills/Technical Writing, & Yearbook
Week of April 16-20
It is already the middle of April! So many exciting things are happening in Rom 115 this week. We are researching, planning, and analyzing film clips this week, as well as participating in Spring Fling events.
English IV
In the next couple of weeks we will begin reading Frankenstein, but before we do, we are fulfilling our research part of the English IV curriculum. The students will be researching Science vs. Morality...basically, the argument that some science may cross a moral boundary. Because this is a major theme in our upcoming novel, this mini-research project leads right into our reading.
Writing Skills/Technical Writing
Now that our big testing is over, we can take a deep breath and do something a little fun, yet still incredibly valuable. These students will view scenes from award winning movies such as The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, and The Sound of Music. We will discuss the same things we do when we read short stories (symbolism, theme, tone, and mood) but also discuss musical score, the use of lighting and color, and the use of sound and special effects. This will end in a culminating writing assignment in which the students will write an analysis of one of the scenes we watched during the week. We will also be continuing our grammar studies during this time as well.
Yearbook
This week will begin planning our ladder for next year. The ladder is a document that lines out every event that will need to be covered and where it will be placed in the book next year.
