Reading Workshop
This week saw some exciting changes to the way the Maples experience Reading Workshop. We have begun our guided reading groups and small group rotations. With our new plan, Maples will be rotating through guided reading, independent reading and word study stations during every reading workshop session. In the beginning of the week the Maples were getting accustomed to moving from one station to another and understanding the expectations of the new rotations.
Writing Workshop
During Writing Workshop, the Maples began their new unit on Small Moments. Small Moments are true stories that happen in one place and time. We began by writing a shared small moment of something that happened in the classroom. Maples began to use different tools to plan their small moments, such as "touch, tell and sketch", which helps them stay on their topic and make sure they provide plenty of detail for their stories.
Math Workshop
In Math Workshop this week the Maples began to explore subtraction in many forms. They played games like One or Two Less and worked on subtraction based story problems. Each day in Math Workshop the Maples tackled a story problem in groups and individually. Maples also learned how to model their thinking and developed various ways to explain how they arrived at their answers.
