Student Orientation Update

Big picture

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

We continue to adapt our operational procedures during these strange times and that will have to include this year's Student Orientation, as we're preparing it in a (you guessed it!) virtual format. Expect a link for Student Orientation to be published on the school website, hsisl.harmonytx.org, and emailed on Thursday, August 13th. We recommend that students and parents participate in this virtual orientation together so that everyone will be familiar with the information that is reviewed.

Orientation will cover topics including required forms, new software such as Schoology, remote learning expectations, schedules, campus core values, and clubs.

The orientation presentation will not be live, so you will be able to view it at your convenience and pace. We will strive to explain everything, but will provide a link that you can submit questions about anything that may be unclear or that you have specific inquiries about.

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy and look forward to tackling the challenges this unique 2020-2021 school year will present together as a HSI Sugar Land family.

Thank you.

Schoology Basics

Dear parents,

Welcome to the new school year at Harmony School of Innovation Sugar Land!

As you are aware, for the first three weeks of school, all students will attend remote learning, and eventually, students will have the option to join in-person learning on campus or continue to learn remotely from home. Either way, the instruction will be provided online and HSI - administration, and staff are ready to support students. Student orientation is scheduled for August 13th and at this time, we would like to share a few online learning information and tips to better prepare you for the successful school year.

Schoology

Schoology is a learning management system (LMS) that has all the tools your institution needs to create engaging content, design lessons, and assess student understanding. Schoology is similar to other systems and platforms that your students have used before such as Skyward, Google Classroom, Edmodo, etc. but this system has many features that will allow your student to take charge of their own learning and you and your students will love it.

A few key features include:

  • Gradebook. Students can see their upcoming, missing, submitted assignments and scores as soon as they are posted or submitted. Submitted assignments may be edited.

  • Message board. Students can collaborate from home via the message board.

  • Materials. Students have access to ALL course materials 24 hours a day no matter where they are via the internet or the Schoology mobile app on their smartphones. No more lost papers!

  • Calendar. No more confusion about due dates! Students can check due dates any time, and connect their email/smartphone/other digital calendaring devices directly to Schoology so they will know immediately if dates change!

At this time, we do not want to overwhelm you and your students with too much information. We will learn as we go and trust me, it will be easy and fun.

Schoology Basics

Big picture
  • At this time, all enrolled students may access Schoology through the student portal.

Our SIS (Student Information System) Skyward will build each course for our teachers and transfer the students automatically into their course based on their schedule in Skyward. Grades will also automatically transfer into the Skyward system for our teacher.

  • Once the student schedule is created in Skyward, students will have automatic access to courses in Schoology. Also, teachers may share the course code with students
Big picture

Parents and students will learn more during the student orientation on August 13th.

Once the school starts on August 17th, teachers will guide and train students on how to use Schoology. We will start with basics, develop skills by the end of August, and by the end of September, we predict that most students will have advanced Schoology skills. Support will be continuously provided.

For students and parents who want to learn more about Schoology and other instructional software, we recommend visiting the ITSpot (through student Harmony portal).

This is a challenging period for all of us, but I am sure that we will learn a lot and acquire skills that will enrich and educate our students.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you hopefully soon.

Distance Learning Behavior Expectations Acknowledgement

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The first step in setting up any classroom is to define expected behaviors, which can be done most effectively through a set of classroom rules and expectations. When setting expectations teachers may consider different parts of their distance learning environment and set expectations for each part.

The attached Google Form shows Harmony-wide expectations for digital citizenship, Schoology classrooms, and conferences, in addition to procedures for disciplinary actions and possible consequences.

Please review and fill out this form with your child(ren).
