Charlemagne eNewsletter
October 6, 2019
Dear Charlemagne Families:
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Community Night Out at Yogurt Extreme last month! We have another Community Night Out this month at Viking Braggot Co. This is a wonderful opportunity to support the school while getting to know other parents in our community better. The flier is attached to the end of this newsletter.
Walk+Roll to School Challenge
Our October 2 Walk & Roll to School Challenge was a big success, and thanks to everyone who walked, biked, scooted or skated to school! You can see an attached picture of lots of student-powered transportation that day at the school.
Carpool Reminders
A few additional reminders about carpool this week:
Never park in the pull-through area. It’s dangerous for cars to pull around and disrupts the traffic flow. If you need to come inside the school, please park your car in a regular spot.
Only Kinder and third grade should be dropped off and picked up in the back parking lot. First, second, fourth and fifth grade students are in the front lot only. Thank you for helping with this important component to parking lot safety.
Please help our buses! This is the first year Charlemagne has had buses in our back parking lot. There is *one* spot where they can park along the back parking lot curb. Please park behind the “Bus Only” sign, never in front of it.
PLEASE see below for pictures of Correct and Incorrect Parking
School Pictures
Just a reminder that on Friday, October 18, we have school pictures in the gym in the morning. We could use parent volunteers to help! Please let us know if you’re able to lend a hand on that day by volunteering at SignupGenius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f45afad2dabf58-picture
Health Screening
Our health screening will take place this year on Friday, October 25. Please also let us know if you are available to volunteer at this event. Students will receive eye and dental exams along with a hearing screening. If we detect any concerns or have important information to share, Lourie Morgan, our school nurse, will be in contact with families.
Next PTO Meeting
We invite everyone to join us for our first PTO meeting on October 15 at 6:30 p.m. Your involvement is critical to the success of all our children, so we would love to have as many parents involved as possible. Please come join us! Childcare will be available.
After School Activities
Just a reminder that if you want to know more information about clubs and after school activities, please visit the Charlemagne website for details.

A Note From Madam Courtney
Happy October à tous!
October is often referred to as the “golden month” of school… routines are well-established, we’re in our rhythm of the year, and academic work is significantly underway.
October is also the month we start introducing some important components of school climate and culture. Two important aspects of this work are in progress:
Friendly Frenchies is back! After a short hiatus last year, we will start monthly meetings again in a few weeks. We will call on our 4th and 5th grade students initially with 3rd grade students waiting in the wings. Research tells us that positive peer involvement and influence is a powerful tool in creating a safe, respectful and responsible school environment. We will count on these leaders to help us connect classrooms across the school, bridge to our LifeSkills program and provide insights and ideas for upcoming school activities.
Our Friendly Frenchies will also consider specific attributes of leadership and what it means to be aspiring compassionate global citizens. We’ll draw upon the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile, a set of ten characteristics we believe all leaders demonstrate. We will encourage Friendly Frenchies to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective… and know they will inspire others to do the same!
We are hosting parent equity conversations… the fourth Monday of every month! The purpose of our work is to encourage conversations about equity and social justice, promote an inclusive school community that engages and draws on the assets of students, families, staff and community members, examine the existing inequities and disparities in student achievement and foster a safe and healthy school climate. We look forward to your participation, curiosity and deep engagement in the topics. We’ll spend the first meeting getting to know each other and building trust and understanding for the crucial and courageous conversations to follow over the course of the year.
I’m looking forward to conversations with students, parents and staff … thanks, as always, for your incredible support of Charlemagne. Have a beautiful October!
