Oakdale Elementary School Newsletter
November 1, 2019
The mission of the Westside Community School District, as an innovative educational system, is to ensure academic excellence and to serve the unique needs of all of our learners.
Oakdale Elementary’s mission is to ensure academic excellence and to serve the unique needs of all learners.
A Message From The Principal
One hundred fifty years ago, the 15th Amendment guaranteeing the right to vote was sent to
the states to ratify. The Cincinnati Red Stockings became the 1st professional baseball team.
The Golden Spike was driven in Utah connecting the Central Pacific Railroad with the Union
Pacific Railroad. The first vacuum cleaner was patented, called the “Sweeping Machine.”
Margarine was patented. The 1st hotel to have indoor plumbing opened in Boston. And, the
most important event, a small group of parents started sending their students to a small school on the northwest corner of 90th and Center. That school, Oak Park School, eventually became Oakdale Elementary and the beautiful new building that your children attend today.
Next week, Oakdale is celebrating our 150 years of existence –our Sesquicentennial. We will
have a guest speaker talk to students about the history of Oakdale, parent volunteers organize
recess games of old, a retired principal, Mrs. Fries, recreate a classroom of yesteryear, a
community open house, and end the week with a special treat for all the students. Sprinkled
throughout the week, classrooms and teachers will be discussing Oakdale’s history with
students. Thank you to volunteers, parents, and staff who have made this week possible. With
outstanding community support, we will continue to do what a past Oakdale resident,
Mr. Elsaker, said regarding the district merger in 1947, “Let’s not let Oakdale lose its identity.” We have not, we will not, and we will continue educating our students for another 150 years!

Visitors to Oakdale
If you would like to have lunch with your student, please let us know before 9:00 a.m., so that our top-notch kitchen staff can plan for the day. We ask, out of fairness to all students, that if you sit at the visitors table, you only eat with your children. If your child would like to invite friends to eat, please join the classroom at their classroom table. This eliminates hurt feelings and is inclusive of all students.
Please note, we do not allow anyone other than parents and siblings to visit during the day without prior permission.

Winter Weather conditions: Safety Patrol will be cancelled if the temperature or wind chill is below 10 degrees. Please check the KETV website (KETV.com) for weather information.

3rd Annual Turkey Trot
This year, Oakdale will be participating in our third annual Turkey Trot! Last year’s event was a huge success! We are again partnering with Westside High School’s Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams to create a philanthropic event that promotes running as an enjoyable, lifelong activity with both physical and mental health benefits.
On November 22nd, beginning at 2:30 p.m., Oakdale will hold three heats of runners (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6) to participate in a “cross country” course on the Oakdale property. On the day of the run, high school cross country runners will be at Oakdale to assist in running this event. Prior to the event, they will share information about their sport along with videos created by the high school students to “hype up” our Oakdale runners.

THANK YOU
A huge thank you to all families who donated to the fall clothing drive!
The Closet continues to benefit from the kindness of Westside students, teachers, and staff. Our recent coat and clothing drive was a big success and we would like to thank all of the families who participated. Your donations will help keep your fellow students warm this winter. Another big thanks goes out to those who donated during professional development day. We will hold another drive in the spring for warm weather clothing but until then, if you are looking for a way to help throughout the year, please remember that toiletries and new-in-package underwear (youth and adult sizes) are an ongoing need and may be donated through your school’s social worker at any time.
As always, Closet volunteers are available to pull clothing for any family in need and deliver it to your school or families may opt to visit The Closet with their social worker.
Sincerely,
Marci Crone and Veronica Martinez
