MI-WAYE REPORT
Week 2
Growth Mindset
Let's Keep Growing
- Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts). This is because they worry less about looking smart and they put more energy into learning. When entire companies embrace a growth mindset, their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they also receive far greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation. In contrast, people at primarily fixed-mindset companies report more of only one thing: cheating and deception among employees, presumably to gain an advantage in the talent race.
- What type of MINDSET do you have?
- It's okay to make mistakes and fail, but we should always learn and grow from them.
Successful People that FAILED over and over again
- Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas." He went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland. In fact, the proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim on the grounds that it would only attract riffraff.
- In high school, actor and comic Robin Williams was voted "Least Likely to Succeed."
- 12 publishers rejected J.K. Rowling's book about a boy wizard before a small London house picked up Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
- Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non-productive." As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."
"So we went to Atari and said, 'Hey, we've got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we'll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we'll come work for you.' And they said, 'No.' So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, 'Hey, we don't need you. You haven't got through college yet.'" ~ Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs on attempts to get Atari and HP interested in his and Steve Wozniak's personal computer.

Middle School Updates
High School Updates
It's Official....Our 4-year cohort graduation rate increased from 90.1 to 93.3 placing MGSD at 9th in the state in that category.
NCDPI made public the official school performance data for the 2016-17 school year.
The HS overall school grade went from an 81 to an 84T and we're rated a B school. That is an incredible jump when you consider all of the pieces of data that need to increase for use to move 3 points! While we are still rated as a B school by the state, in my opinion, your efforts last year were second to no one in the state of North Carolina!
As Mr. Schwarzenegger stated in his email, to be rated an "A" school by NC, we need an overall score of 85, and that is going to happen! Every single class, teacher and student counts to make this happen.
I want to give you all a BIG THANK YOU! This could not be possibly done with what you all do with our kids in the MI-WAYE program.
