Leading the Way with Creativity and Sustainability - Ms. Crummie
The new school year began smoothly. Phase 1 of our Safe Routes to School is complete with a new sidewalk to Ballard Drive, a pedestrian crosswalk with a crossing warning light and a new school street sign. During this first quarter of school, our teachers and staff opened the pathway of learning opportunities that embedded 21st century skills of communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. As you read this quarterly school e-news, take notice how we are leading the way with creativity and sustainability.
Stay informed by checking out our school and PTO's web page with the calendar events
and student activities. Follow our school's and students' twitter feed which also gives on-going announcements and student reflections about their learning experiences. Your continued support of volunteering, monetary contributions, participation in our PTO's community-building fundraiser events, food contributions to our teacher/staff appreciation lunches, supporting our PTO Eagle Time afterschool enrichment program and establishing routines at home with your child to come to school prepared and ready to learn is essential to our continued success.
Being a season of thanksgiving, we thank the PTO Executive Board and PTO for their amazing support to our school as well as many other parent leaders, volunteers and community helpers such as; Miller School Tutors, WAHS Teacher Cadets, FISH volunteers, Henley Helpers and our 2015-16 Crozet Connections of local business sponsors. Thank You for making Crozet a wonderful school and have a safe and restful holiday season!
News from Guidance with Ms. Joyner
News from the Clinic with Ms. Hajek
Head lice is another common community problem that we see at school, and even though lice are not dangerous or transmit disease they are a nuisance. Please let me know if you have questions/concerns regarding this issue. I am in the process of completing vision screening on all third grade students. Vision is routinely checked in the 3rd,7th,9th grades, and anytime upon request. I will contact parents/guardians of any child who did not pass this screening. I am also going through students' records for any missing vaccinations, and I will send letters if your child's record is incomplete. Often times the vaccination has been done, but the paper work did not get sent to the school. As always, please call the clinic at 823-4800 if I can be of any help
Art News from Ms. McReynolds
Please check out my website! It is under construction right now, but I am trying to put up more artwork from your children and to post more often this year! Here is my link: mrsmcreynoldsartstudio.weebly.com. Students in Kindergarten have been practicing their cutting skills with a “Line Design Collage” and a “Shape Robot Collage”. 1stgrade listened to the story “Monsters Love School” and created their own cool “Monster Collage”. They most recently made a “Fall Collage” with pumpkins, gourds, and leaves. 2nd grade watched a short video about Pop Art and created a “Pop Art Self-Portrait” and they are just finishing up a “Fall Scarecrow Collage”. 3rd grade painted “Warm or Cool Hands” and are just finishing up a “Perspective Tree” painting. 4th grade created “Zentangle Letters”. They are currently finishing up An “Abstract Optical Illusion Design”. They look AWESOME! 5th grade worked really hard on a “Radial Design” this 9 weeks. Check them out on the bulletin board when you walk through the front doors of the school. They watched a video on the folk artist Heather Galler and created a “Folk Art Landscape”. It has been a busy 9 weeks in art!

PE News from Ms. Laine & Mr. Laird
In early October, PE had the first of four "Buddy PE" days for this school year. All classes came to PE with a class from a different grade level. Each student got a buddy from the other grade and then were given some time to talk to their buddy and find out about them. Then we all did four stations using various balls with our buddy and concluded the day playing Pizza Battle.
Building a Community of Life Long Learners through Curiosity & Creativity - Design 2015 Projects
Learning to Ask Questions - Kg
During the first nine weeks, we have had many community helpers visit kindergarten. The students have enjoyed learning about their jobs and have been practicing questioning skills. The students then chose a community helper to teach the class about. They enjoyed learning from each other!
Equine Studies - 1st Grade
Our First Graders visited Camp Friendship this October and are excited to continue learning and growing in their equine studies year-long project.
Botanical Studies 2nd Grade
Genre Studies - 3rd Grade
This quarter students visited the Crozet Public Library and got their very own library cards. They also received a tour and learned about the different genres of books from the head librarian, Wendy Saz.
Global Read Aloud 4th Grade
Fourth graders participated in the Global Read Aloud this quarter. We joined over 525,000 other students from around the world in reading Fish in a Tree, by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. We shared our thoughts on the book by using padlets, twitter, writeabout.com, and skype. It was great to connect with readers from everywhere!
IMPACT Project 5th Grade
Our Crozet fifth graders are building a foundation towards our IMPACT project. We are reading Blood On The River, a historical fiction tale of Jamestown and we are imagining a day without water for a poignant art contest supported by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority, the City of Charlottesville, and Albemarle County Service Authority.
