PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hutia te rito o te harakeke
Kei whea te kōmako e kō?
Kī mai ki ahau:
He aha te mea nui o te Ao?
He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata
If the heart of the harakeke was removed, where will the bellbird sing?
If I was asked, what was the most important thing in the world: I would be compelled to reply.
It is people, it is people, it is people!
“Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness…”
(Gen 1:26)
Kia Ora whanau,
As mentioned in Sunday’s welcome back to school notice. We are looking forward to a year filled with being the best versions of ourselves as we can. ‘Finding happiness in making others happy’ and ‘Never seeing a need without doing something about it’ ST. Mary MacKillop. underpins our school values of:
taking RESPONSIBILITY for our actions
being RESPECTFUL of ourselves and others
engaging in our COMMUNITY through service and,
deepening our SPIRITUALITY through our own encounters with Christ.
Nau mai haere mai - Welcome

Leading in Faith, Learning for Life
Have we really only been at school for 3 days!
The bikes are out, the sand pit is in use, the ezi-rollers are a hit, the PE trolley is stocked, the refreshed playground is being enjoyed, the swimming pool is in full swing and preparing ourselves for learning is well underway. The icing on the cake has been seeing Father Paul Kerridge engaging with all our tamariki at lunch time. We are truely blessed.
Ngā mihi - THANK YOU!
Concreting
We would like to THANK Kyle and his team from Hawkes Bay Plumbing & Drainage for completing the upgrade of our school entrance.
Parish Tree Triming & beautification
The Parish Leadership Team would like to extend their appreciation to Cooper Tate’s dad Doug for all the work he did around our church. And another huge Thank you to Doug for trimming all the trees that were over hanging our school pool.
Birthday Book Initiative
Watch this space! - A sneak peak!
Mrs. Simpson and our: to be elected Librarians, are in the process of refreshing our library. One initiative they have is offering an opportunity for families to donate a book selected from our school/student ‘Wish List’ to our school. Another initiative is collecting ‘old/out of date’ books to donate to others more in need.
If you would like to volunteer some time to assist in our library operations please contact Mrs. Simpson. Thank you Deb for already having volunteered.

MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
Welcome back to school.
We hope everyone has had a great time during the holidays.
A warm welcome to all the new students that have joined St Joseph's this year. Remember not to come to school on the 6th of February because it is Waitangi day, a day of celebration for New Zealand.
We have School Parish Mass on Sunday the 12th of February. We are hoping to see everybody there next Sunday.
Hope you have a great rest of the week.
Kind Regards
Lilla, Jayde, Ella & Ruby
CATHOLIC CHARACTER
Monday 6 February 2023 is our national day commemorating the first signings of the Treaty of Waitangi – Te Tiriti o Waitangi, in 1840. “It is good that we look here to Waitangi, where in these first sacred discussions about the way to live in partnership with each other, my predecessor Bishop Pompallier asked for and received a guarantee of religious freedom and protection. It is religious tolerance, religious inclusion and religious acceptance that is our heritage. We honour and celebrate that today." From Cardinal John’s address at Waitangi in 2020 reaffirming protection of religious beliefs.

PFG Update (St Joseph's Parents and Friends Fundrasing Group)
Welcome back to Term 1, we hope you all had a great break and ready to get back into the school year.
We had a great end to 2022 and 2023 is looking just as positive. Following the successful Christmas raffle where we raised over $6,000, we also secured $15,000 to replace the Playground undersafety surfacing from Grassroots Trust and also secured a further $1,200 from Centralines for new shade trees.
Over the break, work began waterblasting the playground and over the next few months, we’ll be looking for wider support on repairing and upgrading aspects of the playground, ahead of the replacement of the safety surfacing in the April School Holidays.
By mid year – we are looking forward to seeing the playground project complete and continuing to work with the Board on other maintenance and activities we need to support the school.
Our first meeting for the year is on Monday 13 February at 7pm in Room 2. Everyone is welcome to join and we are always looking for new members or to hear from parents, grandparents or friends that are able to help and support the school and the wider efforts of the PFG.
