Gateway Regional Community Newsletter-September 28, 2020
Principal's Message
Gateway has been busy working on how to reopen our school with a high priority on student and staff safety. On September 30th, the Gateway Regional Board of Education will vote on the plan to reopen the school. Pending BOE approval, the current plan is to bring the students in with two phases. The first phase will be for 7th Graders to begin hybrid classes on October 5th. All remaining students in grades 8-12 will begin on October 13th. We would like to bring the 7th graders in a week early to allow them to become acclimated to their new school environment and prepare them for the routines of the school. Under the current plan, 7th graders in Cohort A will report to school on October 5th and 6th. 7th graders in Cohort B will report on October 8th and 9th. On October 13th, all Cohort A students in grades 7-12 will report to in-person school and on October 16, all Cohort B Students in grades 7-12 will report to in-person school.

Welcome to GoGuardian Parent!
Congrats! Your school has just granted you access to GoGuardian Parent, a mobile app to help keep parents/guardians aware of your children's activity on school-issued devices and provide you with additional controls during out-of-school hours. GoGuardian Parent is a companion to the classroom management and internet filtering tools that your child's school uses for devices issued to students. Through the use of this app, we hope to encourage more open and honest conversations between parents and children that will result in safer practices and responsible browsing habits.
What is GoGuardian Parent?
GoGuardian Parent was created to help provide additional educational support to administrators and teachers by allowing parents to see what sites and documents their children are browsing and providing parents with additional internet controls at home. The app gives parents a bird's eye view of the apps and websites that their kids are on most often and control over school-issued devices during out-of-school hours. With this perspective, parents can be made aware of what types of browsing behavior schools are seeing from students so they can all work together to encourage more effective internet browsing habits at home and at school.
What's the intention of the app?
By providing insight and controls over student browsing activity, our goal is to empower parents to take a more active role in their children's online learning. We aim to create a greater sense of transparency with student browsing to help bring about a greater sense of accountability on both the parent's and the student's part. We also believe that transparency and insight will increase the likelihood of productive student browsing habits on a more consistent basis.
What is included in this app:
- Top 5 summary of student browsing (apps, extensions, documents, and websites visited)
- Teacher interventions
- 30-day view of websites, videos, documents, apps, and extensions (NEW for 20-21)
- Ability to block websites on school-issued devices during out-of-school hours (NEW for 20-21)
- Ability to pause internet access on school-issued devices during out-of-school hours, either on-demand or at a scheduled time (NEW for 20-21)
To access the app, please follow the below instructions:
- Download the app
- iPhone: Visit App Store, search for GoGuardian Parent, and tap the download button.
- Android: Visit Google Play Store, search for GoGuardian Parent, and tap the download button.
- After the app is successfully downloaded and installed, open it up and enter the email address registered with the school. Note: If you forgot your registered email address, please reach out to your school administrator.

Tuition Assistance
Applications are now being accepted for a program offering tuition assistance to working families needing child-care because some schools are offering remote learning.
- Families making up to $75,000 can apply for the aid, funded under a $150 million program established by the state Department of Human Services.
- Families must have school-age children between the ages of 5 and 13 to receive funding, which is also dependent on proof of income and a statement that the local school district is offering remote learning.
Application can be found at https://www.childcarenj.gov/COVID19.
South Jersey Times Girls Tennis: Players/Teams to Watch, Dates to Keep, 2020
By Matt Cosentino | For NJ Advance Media
Julia Ognibene, Gateway, Sr.
Ognibene ascended from third singles as a sophomore to second singles as a junior, and now she appears ready to rise to the No. 1 spot. She posted a 21-3 record last year and reached the semifinals of the Gloucester County Tournament before falling to eventual champion Carlee Cristella. Her impressive victory over Woodstown’s Gigi Belisario in the South Jersey, Group 1 final helped Gateway win the sectional title.
Gateway
Last year was one to remember for the Gators, who went 19-2 and won the South Jersey, Group 1 title for their first sectional championship since 2001 and also claimed their first Gloucester County crown in 18 years. Five starters are back, led by senior second singles Julia Ognibene and junior third singles Kaitlyn Smith, who each won at least 20 matches in 2019. Juniors Maddy Scambia and Rachel McKnight captured the county doubles title and senior Jenna Brysewski is another veteran doubles player. Gateway moves into the Colonial Conference Liberty Division with the likes of perennial power Haddonfield and West Deptford, but the tough schedule should prepare the Gators for an attempt at their third consecutive sectional final and a repeat championship.
Fall 2020 COVID-19 Athletic Spectator Protocols
Gateway's fall sports teams return to competition this week, beginning the abbreviated fall 2020 season. As a result of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the governor's executive order restricting the number of people at events, spectators at athletic events this fall will be extremely limited. In many cases, spectators will only include the families of our student-athletes.
For those attending our athletic events, please prepare in advance by becoming familiar with our spectator protocols that will be in effect this fall.
Please note that football tickets will not be available to students and the general public.
All home events that are played in the stadium, including all football games, all field hockey games, and select boys and girls soccer matches, will be streamed live on the NFHS Network, the nation's leading destination for live coverage of high school sports and events. Contests will also be available on demand following the conclusion of each competition. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to follow the Gators whenever they want from wherever they are! Click here for the full broadcast schedule and to start watching!
