Building your portfolio
Updates for Laura's JHU Teacher Growth Candidates
Mid-semester already...
Can you believe it's already the middle of the semester? You are officially halfway through the preparation coursework for the Teacher Growth Portfolio. Congrats! Now, let's take a deep breath and dive right back in. We need to finish strong, people. We can do this!
Quick tips for the Instructional Practice Module
- The module is due this Sunday, October 23.
This module encompasses three InTASC Standards: 6, 7, and 8.
- Make sure you carefully read over the section guide. It contains leading questions to address in the interpretive essay for Instructional Practice, and it contains suggestions for evidence.
- Make sure you look at the elementary portfolio samples posted on blackboard and get a sense of what makes them good and here some improvement was needed. I find that looking at how someone else approaches layout, design, annotations, etc. is usually helpful. I'm sure you will too. Make sure you go beyond the appearance, though. Look at the kinds of evidence they were selecting and how it demonstrated or didn't demonstrate the standards.
InTASC Standard 6
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
- There's quite a few key words you want to make sure you emphasize both in the written interpretation essay and through the evidence/layers and annotations of them.
- Multiple methods of assessment --> make sure you have more than ONE.
- Engage learners
- Monitor learner progress
- Guide decision-making
InTASC Standard 7
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross- disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
- There's quite a few key words you want to make sure you emphasize both in the written interpretation essay and through the evidence/layers and annotations of them.
- Plans instruction
- Rigorous learning goals
*You MUST include a self-created long-term/unit plan for this standard. For those of you who have prescribed curricular/district materials you can you the self-create plan from your Effective Practices course work.
InTASC Standard 8
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
- There's quite a few key words you want to make sure you emphasize both in the written interpretation essay and through the evidence/layers and annotations of them.
- Variety of instructional strategies --> not just ONE.
