Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
As you are most likely aware, we now have a clear picture about May 8th. We will not be holding school that day and our teaching staff will be taking a furlough (non-paid) day to participate in the statewide day of action. Our 6th grade students (and many of their teachers) leave for Outdoor School on May 7th and will be at their camp until May 10th. Rest assured, those students and teachers will remain at their camps on May 8th and continue with Outdoor School as regularly scheduled.
We also provide an experience here at Meadow Park for 6th grade students who don't attend a camp for Outdoor School. On May 8th, those 6th grade students who are not attending Outdoor School at a camp will not come to school. We have adjusted the schedule for the experience here at Meadow Park and moved the previously scheduled May 8th field trip to May 10th.
Although we will not have school on May 8th, we will be offering both breakfast and lunch for all students up to age 18 on site. Breakfast will be offered from 8-9 and lunch from 11-12. Our students and their siblings are welcome to come here to get breakfast and lunch. Students and siblings are only allowed to be on site during those times as we cannot provide supervision throughout the day.
If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm happy to help.
Make it a great week!
Jared Freeman
Principal

State Testing - Complete!
A small number of students will still need to complete a portion or two and will have the opportunity to do so this coming week. If your child happens to have an absence recorded that you believe is due to testing, please feel free to call the front office and ask for Andrea. She will be able to verify and make the change if this is the case.
How do I find out my child's state testing Results?
Student Test Results in ParentVUE
State test scores will be available in ParentVUE! You will be able to see your child’s test results sooner than in prior years with less impact on the environment. For the English Language Arts and Math tests, a student’s score is available in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Due to the implementation of the new state science test this year, science scores will not be available until next fall after passing scores are identified by the Oregon Department of Education. The Testing Information tab in ParentVUE has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school. Learn more about ParentVUE. Please note: these scores are not currently available in the ParentVue phone app. Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will be mailed English Language Arts and Math test results over the summer, Students with at least one parent/guardian with ParentVUE access may request a printed report by contacting Kay Jenkins by email at kay_jenkins@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.
Dual Language Science Learning Highlight
In Ms. Sanchez’s Dual Language Science class, students are trying to understand how evidence shows that relationships develop over time. By asking the essential question, “How do trees, rocks and fossils provide evidence about earth's history?”, students we able to make sense of different types of evidence in a four-part activity.
First, students learned various methods to calculate the age of different objects such as trees, rocks and fossils and used these calculations to estimate some of the weather characteristics in which these trees lived. They also looked at the rock cycle and sediments that help fossils become harder or petrified which then led into students using Carbon- 14 dating to calculate the half life of some radioactive isotopes. Next, students learned about the five different types of fossils, and then made their own fossil by impression using plaster of paris and small dinosaur toys. Last, students investigated different types of dinosaurs that existed and how we can get information such as diet, size, and habitat from their fossils.
It is our valuable early release time in Beaverton that gives teachers the opportunity to plan meaningful units that engage students in powerful learning.
