What is SkillsUSA? A 2-Minute Primer

Whether you're new to this newsletter or it's simply been a while since you've thought about workplace readiness education, here's a brief refresher on SkillsUSA and why it's so important to students and staff at DTEC.

SkillsUSA is a student- and advisor-led national nonprofit educational organization tasked with preparing students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service industries. Not only does SkillsUSA prepare our students for future careers by giving them opportunities to cultivate the technical, workplace, and personal skills necessary to thrive in the job market, it also helps foster the next generation of thoughtful professionals with the motivation and drive to push their industries to the next level.

Every student at DTEC has the opportunity to be a SkillsUSA member, representative, officer, and more. To learn more, check out the short video below or visit

Cross-Curricular DTEC vs KTEC Competition: OPERATION REBUILD

Big picture
At DTEC we love two things: healthy competition and collaborative projects. This year, the Idaho National Guard presented us with an opportunity for both in the form of a DTEC vs. KTEC Humvee Build-Off called Operation Rebuild!

In Fall of 2020, the National Guard donated two run-down Humvees and $25,000 to two Idaho schools -- one to us, and one to the technical high school in Kootenai county. The competition got put on hold last year due to Covid and online learning, but now that we're back in-person, we are back on the Humvee!! Students from our Diesel, Autotech, Autobody, Welding, Construction, Precision Machining, and Graphic Design programs are hard at work making our Humvee run, getting it all tricked out, and making it look so nice it could be the lead car in a parade, school, or recruiting event. The winning high school gets mad bragging rights. And you know how we like to brag.

Although we don't want to give away too much of the fun while we're actively working on the project, we will be sharing little sneak peeks in this newsletter. Stay tuned for updates!
