Volume 1: Week 15 November 29, 2018
Dear Martell Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and long weekend!
It was great to be back this week in the routine of teaching and learning at Martell!
This week brought our first skating party of the year! Lots of fun was had by all! Bringing our community together outside school helps strengthen the bonds inside school. I, for on, had not been on skates in about 30 years!
There are many exciting things coming up. Please continue to check the Monitor and watch the email blasts for information.

TSD Weather Policy for indoor/outdoor lineup and indoor/outdoor recess
Recess will not occur during inclement weather or extreme cold. District policy states that there will be no outdoor recess when temperatures are below 15º Fahrenheit; and, if temperatures are between 15º and 20º Fahrenheit, the wind-chill factor will be considered.
We use the “Feels Like” temperature on the Weather Channel App to determine if we have morning indoor or outdoor lineup as well as indoor or outdoor recess. The office will make this determination before the scheduled recess.
We believe that participation in vigorous play and exercise helps develop fitness and is important to the total well-being of the child. All students are expected to participate in recess. Occasionally, parents ask that a student be allowed to remain indoors due to illness. It is generally felt that if a student is well enough to attend school, he/she is well enough to go outside for a short recess period. However, if an unusual condition exists which permits a student to attend school but participation in recess is inadvisable, a doctor’s note must be presented to the office.
Martell Family Photo Night
December 3 5:00PM-8:30PM
The Martell PTO is happy to provide an opportunity for families to take a photo to be used for just about anything from holiday cards to family history. Families will get a 5 minute time slot with a professional photographer who will send an email containing your images and permission to use the images in any way. Families should expect the link to arrive 3-6 days after Photo Night. The cost is $25/family. Sign up soon, slots will fill quickly. You can access the sign up here.
When/how can I see my child's report card?
Tuesday, December 11, 2018-Powerschool
On December 11, you will be able to access your child's report card on Powerschool. There are a few things I would like you to know as you view your child’s progress from the first marking period.
Report cards have been revised by our Teaching and Learning Department this school year. You will notice the report card view and areas assessed look different.
While most of the report card is filled out, some areas are left blank as teachers have not assessed these standards at this point in the year.
The Science and Social Studies content areas will have fewer areas assessed due to a shift in curriculum that is taking place over a two-year period.
The comment section of the report card is limited to 1000 characters.
The report card is just one form of academic progress monitoring and reporting throughout the school year. Parent-teacher conferences were intentionally scheduled in October for you to have earlier direct communication where you have the chance to ask questions and focus directly on your child. We had almost 100% participation at fall conferences.
The TSD Teaching and Learning Department will be surveying parents on this year’s report card revisions at the end of the year.
I am incredibly proud to lead our top notch teaching staff at Martell. Thank you for supporting the teaching and learning that takes place at Martell!

Also, please share this survey link with any other parents who might be able to give input as well.

Can you guess Mrs. Barsh's heritage?
Mrs. Barsh grew up in an immigrant family! She has visited her father's hometown 3 times, and she is regularly in touch with her relatives.
1. She celebrates her heritage by cooking sauce every Sunday.
2. She loves having many large family parties.
3. She has 21 cousins just on her dad's side.
4. She even married Mr. Barsh who grew up in a country close to the one where her family is from.
5. Clue, her maiden name may be a big hint!!
