Broad Meadows Middle School Community Update 1.15.2024
Broad Meadows Middle School Community,
It appears winter has arrived as we look ahead to colder temperatures this week. We ask that you remind your students that school opens for breakfast every morning at 7:45 AM. Please also remember that if temperatures fall below 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning with the wind chill that we will be encouraging students to come inside the building . Students should enter through the cafeteria door and if they are not having breakfast, they are welcome to sit in our auditorium until the morning bell rings.
We were also excited to reward 181 students students during the month of November with prizes from the Celtics All-Star Foundation for perfect attendance. We were impressed to see that number jump to 185 students for the month of December and look forward to rewarding all 185 students later in January. Please note that perfect attendance can be achieved by having no unexcused absences in a month and 4 days or less days tardy to school. School begins every day at 8:15 AM and students who have not arrived by 8:20 AM will be marked tardy.
Students completed winter MAP testing in Reading, Mathematics and Science last week and we will complete make-up testing for all students who were absent this week. We appreciate the hard work of all of our students and look forward to using this important benchmark data to guide instructional practices moving forward. We will also kick off ACCESS testing for all ELL students this week and will look for complete ACCESS testing by Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
Looking ahead, we are excited to kick off our Grade 6 Science Program this week afterschool from 2:30 - 3:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We also want to highlight our middle school wrestling program and ask that you see the flier below for more information if your student is interested in joining. We will also be starting up grade 7 and 8 intramural basketball in several weeks and will run a program for 6th grade students later in the year. Permission slips for basketball will be available in the main office and with Mr. Dineen in our Tech. Ed. room. Finally, please keep an eye out for Art Club with Mrs. Hayes which will begin running in several weeks. Permission slips for Art Club will be available later this week.
We will be hosting our PTO fundraiser on Monday, January 15th and ask that you come out and support our school by ordering food from Time Out Pizza & Grille located at 524 Sea Street in Quincy. 10% of all sales for the day go to our school when you mention Broad Meadows Middle School.
Thank you always for your support and let's make it a great week at Meadows!

Chromebooks
At this point, all students in grades 6-8 should have a school assigned Chromebook. To support us at school we ask that you work with your student to find a place where they can charge their Chromebook every evening so that it is ready to use every morning. Students should bring their Chromebook to school each day.
If a Chromebook breaks we would ask your student to return it to the main office and we will provide your student a replacement. If a Chromebook is lost, please work with your student to locate it. If it is not found, families may incur the charge of a replacement Chromebook per the user agreement. Please feel free to reach out to the main office during school hours if we can support you with this process.

QPS Student Personal Electronic Device Policy
Quincy Public Schools Student Personal Electronic Device Policy -
The use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices during the school day negatively impacts student engagement with learning activities and is often a source of disciplinary interventions. This Quincy Public Schools Student Electronic Device Policy is intended to remove this source of distraction by eliminating the use of personal electronic devices (including, but not limited to, cell phones, tablets, smart watches, earbuds, and headphones) during academic instructional time. All Quincy Public Schools students in Grades 4-12 have been issued a Chromebook to be used during instructional time when online access is required.
Therefore, for high school students:
1. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices may not be used for any purpose during classes, but are allowed during study or lunch periods and while passing between classes.
2. All cell phones and personal electronic devices must be turned off (not simply on silent or vibrate mode) during class time.
3. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be put away and not be visible during class time. Staff members may request to have students place their device in a designated storage location within the classroom.
4. Exceptions to this Policy may be made by the Principal or designee and by individual teachers to accommodate a student’s IEP or 504 plan.
For elementary and middle school students, cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be turned off and safely secured in a locker or backpack during the school day.
DISCIPLINE
Students who do not comply with the terms of the Policy will be subject to progressive discipline as follows:
First offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The device(s) will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
Second offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The student’s parent/guardian will be called and the device(s) will be returned to parent/guardian.
Third offense: Same as the second offense above. In addition, the student will be prohibited from bringing any personal electronic devices to school for the remainder of the school year.
Students committing repeated violations of this policy may be subject to additional disciplinary actions, consistent with the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook.
